American Express is targeting select cardholders for an offer that would allow them to earn up to 12 Hilton Honors points on Alamo rental car spending for rentals completed in the United States.
The earnings offered by this promotion are capped and the number of Hilton points you’ll earn per dollar will vary depending on which Hilton co-branded card you hold, so for a lot of cardholders, this won’t be a worthwhile deal. For some, however, this may work.

Thoughts
This offer is only being targeted to holders of Hilton’s co-branded credit cards so if you don’t hold one of those, you’re out of luck.
With the number of bonus points capped at 5,000, this offer is effectively valid on up to $1,000 of spending made with Alamo, in the United States by 8 March 2024 and with car rental prices being as they are, a lot of people are going to find that spending target an easy one to hit.
The total number of Hilton Honors points available to be earned on the first $1,000 of spending made with Alamo, will depend on which Hilton co-branded credit card you hold.
The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card earns 7 points/dollar on select travel (which includes rental car spending with Alamo – terms apply) and so, combined with this offer, would earn a cardholder 12 Hilton Points/dollar on up to $1,000 of Alamo spending (terms apply).

The card_name (review), and the card_name (review) don’t offer bonus points for rental car spending and so before the bonus earnings are applied, each of these cards will return just 3 points/dollar (terms apply)
Combined with this offer, however, these cards would earn a cardholder 8 Hilton Points/dollar on up to $1,000 of Alamo spending (terms apply).
I value Hilton points at 0.4 cents each (based on the value that I know I can get out of them with relative ease) so for me, the extra effective rebate that this offer would give me on up to $1,000 of spending with Alamo is 2%.
If I was a holder of the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, my total effective rebate when using this offer would be 4.8%, and if I was using any of the other three cards, my total effective rebate would be 3.2%.
If you’re keen to boost your Hilton Honors balance, this may be a tempting offer for you, but for me the returns aren’t good enough to offset what I would be giving up.
None of the Hilton cards mentioned above offers primary rental car cover, so if I was to use this offer, I’d be giving up the primary cover that some of my other cards offer (e.g. card_name) and to do that, I’d want to be compensated well.
If I was renting for myself, my card_name would earn me 2 Ultimate Rewards points/dollar on my Alamo spending and to me, that’s an effective rebate of 3%, and even if I had the option of using the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card to earn an effective rebate of 4.8%, the 1.8% extra that this card would earn me over what the card_name offers, isn’t enough of a bonus to tempt me into giving up the primary rental cover that comes with the card_name.
If I was renting for business, I could use the card_name to earn 3 Ultimate Rewards points/dollar on my Alamo spending (to me, that’s an effective rebate of 4.5%) and I’d have primary rental car cover as well so, once again, the potential earnings from the Hilton card + the Amex offer wouldn’t be big enough to tempt me.
If you don’t have a card in your wallet that offers primary rental cover, your views on this offer may differ (why don’t you have a good card for car rental spending by the way?), but for me, this is an offer to pass up.
Bottom line
Some holders of Hilton co-branded cards are being targeted to earn 5 bonus points/dollar on spending made with Alamo in the US (capped at 5,000 bonus points) and depending on what card this is targeted to, that could make the overall earning rate on up to $1,000 of Alamo spending 12 points/dollar.
Personally, I’m not a fan of this offer for the reasons I’ve already outlined, but if you need to top up a Hilton account and have an upcoming need to rent a car, there’s a chance that this offer will work for you.
