UPDATE 28 September 2020: Chase has announced the extension of the “Pay Yourself Back” benefit
The Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred credit cards have been offering special benefits and enhanced earnings in select shopping categories since the beginning of July, but with the end of September rapidly approaching, cardholders have just days left to make the most of what these cards currently offer.
A Recap Of What The Cards Have Been Offering
Chase Sapphire Reserve
Until 30 September, the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card offers special bonuses for spending at gas stations, select streaming services, and Instacart. To go alongside the 3 points per dollar that the card already offers on all travel spending and on worldwide dining, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card currently offers the following:
- 10 points/dollar on select streaming services (up to $1,500 in spending)*
- 5 points/dollar at gas station (up to $1,500 in spending)
- 5 points/dollar on all Instacart deliveries and pick-ups (up to $3,000 in spending)
*Per Chase, only subscriptions paid for or purchases made with the following select merchants will qualify for this offer: Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Netflix, Sling, Vudu, Fubo TV, Apple Music, SiriusXM, Pandora, Spotify, YouTube TV.
In addition to the above, the Chase Sapphire Reserve card is also still offering up to $50 in statement credits for Instacart Express subscriptions:
- Get a $50 statement credit for any new or renewing Annual Instacart Express membership (cost: $99)
- Get a $9.99 statement credit for any new or renewing Monthly Instacart Express membership (cost: $9.99)
Extended Benefit
Don’t forget that the Chase Sapphire Reserve card currently allows cardholders to pay themselves back for any spending made at grocery stores and dining at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery services), home improvement stores, and select charitable organizations by using their Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. Reserve cardholders can currently use their points at 1.5 cents each and this benefit has now been extended through 30 April 2021 (it had been due to expire on 30 September).
Full terms and conditions of these bonuses and offers can be found on this Chase webpage.

Chase Sapphire Preferred
Until 30 September 2020, the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card offers special bonuses for spending at gas stations, select streaming services, and Instacart just like the Reserve card…but the enhanced earnings aren’t quite so good.
To go alongside the 2 points per dollar that the card already offers on all travel spending and on worldwide dining, the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card currently offers the following:
- 5 points/dollar on select streaming services (up to $1,500 in spending)*
- 3 points/dollar at gas station (up to $1,500 in spending)
- 3 points/dollar on all Instacart deliveries and pick-ups (up to $3,000 in spending)
In addition to the above, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card also now offers up to $50 in statement credits for Instacart Express subscriptions:
- Get a $50 statement credit for any new or renewing Annual Instacart Express membership (cost: $99)
- Get a $9.99 statement credit for any new or renewing Monthly Instacart Express membership (cost: $9.99)
Extended Benefit
Don’t forget that the Chase Sapphire Prefered card currently allows cardholders to pay themselves back for any spending made at grocery stores and dining at restaurants (including takeout and eligible delivery services), home improvement stores, and select charitable organizations by using their Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. Reserve cardholders can currently use their points at 1.25 cents each and this benefit has now been extended through 30 April 2021 (it had been due to expire on 30 September).
Full terms and conditions of these bonuses and offers can be found on this Chase webpage.
Bottom Line
Chase has been very good at keeping its two best travel-related credit cards relevant at a time where not many of us are doing much travel, but with no news (as yet) of any new special bonuses for the last three months of this year, the current bonus categories and statement credits may be the last chance that cardholders get to make the most of their Sapphire cards this year. If you haven’t yet met the spending targets in each of the current bonus categories now may be the time to bring forward some spending and lock-in the current earnings rates.
