Back in April, Alaska Airlines announced that it would operate three new routes to/from Southern California starting this month and as those routes are now live, have new schedules, and have been joined by a fourth new route that we haven’t discussed, this seems like a good time to take another look at what the new routes are.

New Alaska Airlines California routes

The April press release told us that starting this fall, Alaska Airlines would operate the following three new routes year-round:

  • San Diego – Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles – Reno
  • Los Angeles – Pasco/Kennewick

As planned, these routes launched a little over a week ago (albeit with different flight numbers and mostly different schedules to the ones that were originally announced), but they were also joined by a fourth new route for Alaska Airlines:

  • Santa Rosa/Sonoma County – Las Vegas

By the looks of things, this route also launched on 1 October, and you’ll find further details below.

San Diego – Las Vegas

AS3342 SAN 08:00 – 09:16 LAS (Mon – Sat)
AS3342 SAN 08:22 – 09:38 LAS (Sun)
AS2088 SAN 12:55 – 14:11 LAS (Mon, Thu, Fri & Sun)
AS3305 SAN 17:03 – 18:22 LAS (Mon, Thu, Fri, & Sun)
AS3370 SAN 21:17 – 22:36 LAS (Daily)

AS3337 LAS 07:12 – 08:20 SAN (Daily)
AS3342 LAS 10:05 – 11:17 SAN (Fri)
AS3342 LAS 10:18 – 11:30 SAN (Mon, Thu, & Sun)
AS2088 LAS 15:00 – 16:08 SAN (Mon, Thu, Fri & Sun)
AS3305 LAS 19:11 – 20:19 SAN (Daily)

The original Alaska Airlines press release indicated that this route would be operated just 4x/week, but as you can see, the current winter schedule shows 4 flights on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays and 2 flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

Los Angeles – Reno

AS3452 LAX 12:18 – 13:47 RNO (Sun)
AS3452 LAX 12:50 – 14:19 RNO (Mon-Sat)
AS3416 LAX 20:59 – 22:23 RNO (Daily)

AS3421 RNO 07:00 – 08:43 LAX (Daily)
AS3325 RNO 14:28 – 16:11 LAX (Sun)
AS3325 RNO 14:59 – 16:42 LAX (Mon-Sat)

Technically, this isn’t a new route for Alaska Airlines as it flew between LA and Reno during summer 2023, but as this is now a year-round route and not just seasonal, I guess we can be generous and call it ‘new’.

Los Angeles – Pasco

AS3426 LAX 19:55 – 22:30 PSC (Daily)
AS3436 PSC 07:00 – 09:51 LAX (Daily)

I must confess that I had no idea where Pasco was until I googled it and discovered that its in Washington and that it is a centre for “outdoor recreation”. This new route (which is the only one not to have seen a schedule change since it was originally announced) may tempt me to go see what it’s like.

Santa Rosa/Sonoma County – Las Vegas

AS2432 STS 08:30 – 10:04 LAS (Mon-Fri & Sun)
AS2432 STS 08:45 – 10:19 LAS (Sat)

AS2431 LAS 18:22 – 20:00 STS (Daily)

Unlike the other three new routes, this one doesn’t touch Southern California, but it does bolster the Alaska Airlines presence at Santa Rosa/Sonoma County by giving the airline its 7th route from the airport Alaska Airlines has been the biggest airline in Sonoma County since 2007).

The aircraft

All four of these new routes are being operated by SkyWest Airlines as Alaska SkyWest using Embraer ERJ 175 aircraft.

Per the seat maps on the Alaska Airlines website, the ERJ175 offers 12 First Class seats in a 1-2 layout, 16 Premium Class seats in a 2-2 layout, and 44 regular Economy Class seats in a 2-2 layout.

According to Aerolopa, these are the seat dimensions on this aircraft:

  • First Class – Pitch 37.8″/Width 20″
  • Premium Cabin – Pitch 33.8″/Width 18.2″
  • Economy Cabin – Pitch 30.3″/Width 18.2″

The truth is that the seat dimensions probably won’t really matter very much on the Las Vegas or Reno routes as the flight time is unlikely to ever go much over ~100 minutes.

On the Pasco route, however, where the flight is noticeably longer, the 30″ pitch in the Economy Class cabin could be problematic if you are tall or ‘large’.

Something to note

Alaska Airlines offers a based service for flights covering select cities in California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah (with a very heavy bias in favor of California) that it calls ‘Flight Pass’, but none of these new routes are included in the Flight Pass program. Hopefully, they’ll get added in the not too distant future.

Bottom line

Alaska Airlines is now operating four new year-round services from/to cities in California with the airline now linking San Diego and Santa Rosa with Las Vegas and Los Angeles with Reno and Pasco.
