On Business and Business Extra are the loyalty programs from British Airways and American Airlines that are aimed at small and medium sized businesses.

On Business and Business Extra have historically been standalone loyalty programs but, over the past year or so, they’ve got closer. American Airlines flyers based outside the US can now credit AA flights to On Business and British Airways flyers based in the US can now credit BA flights to Business Extra.

On top of all this, the two airlines now actively direct their members to whichever program serves their geographical location.

A big difference between the two programs is that anyone can sign up for Business Extra (even private individuals who don’t have a business) but, if you want to sign up to On Business, you actually need to have a registered business.

More details can be found on the webpages of both loyalty programs:

Business Extra Trans-Atlantic Promotion

business-extra-bxta16-promotion

While the On Business promotion is pretty average this is a promotion that, if you can, you should definitely be signing up for.

It’s been going for a little over a week now but that isn’t really an issue and the rewards are pretty good.

Per the promotion page:

Starting May 1, your company can earn up to 1,600 Business Extra bonus points with each transatlantic roundtrip flight*. And best of all, there’s no limit to the amount of bonus points you can earn.

  • Earn 400 bonus points per transatlantic round-trip in Main Cabin
  • Earn 1,600 bonus points per transatlantic round-trip in Business or First Class

The Details:

  • Register via the promotion page
  • Use promotion code BXTA16
  • Must register before travel
  • Travel between 1 May and 31 July 2016
  • Promotion is valid for travel on purchased, eligible, published-fare tickets on eligible flights booked in eligible fare classes for travel on (1) American Airlines (2) British Airways and Iberia, ticketed on American Airlines (001), British Airways (125), and Iberia (075) ticket stock. Promotion is also valid on purchased, eligible, published-fare tickets on eligible codeshare flights operated by Finnair, ticketed on American Airlines (001) ticket stock.

There are two main reasons why this is a good promotion:

  1. The promotion is stackable with the current American Airlines “Earn up to 50,000 Miles on Trans-Atlantic Travel” promotion that I wrote about yesterday.
  2. Business Extra points can be quite useful:
    • 1,200 points will upgrade a full fare international ticket to the next class of service (subject to availability)
    •  3,100 points will upgrade a number of discounted international fares to the next class of service (subject to availability)
    • 2,400 points buys you or someone you nominate AAdvantage Gold status
    • 300 points gets an Admirals Club day pass
    • 3,000 points gets and annual Admirals club membership

And there’s a lot more you can do with the points too (like purchase award travel). For full details take a look HERE.

Bottom Line

On Business is a lot less lucrative that it was in the past but, if you have a business you can register, you have nothing to lose by signing up.

If you credit your miles to American Airlines AAdvantage then you should definitely have a Business Extra account. The program offers some pretty good offers every now and again (like this one) and it’s not like they take up an inordinate amount of time or effort – all you have to is register and then forget about it…until the time comes to check that you’ve been correctly credited with the points.

The biggest positive here is the fact that the Business Extra promotion stacks with the current AAdvantage promotion meaning that there are a lot of miles and points you can earn between now and the end of July.
