UPDATE: Some or All of the offer(s) mentioned in this post have now expired

I’ve seen reports flying around which suggest that Chase is no longer offering a traditional sign-up bonus on its British Airways Visa Signature Card, but those reports are inaccurate.

If you’d like a sign-up offer on the Chase British Airways Signature card there’s still 100,000 bonus Avios on offer (Offer Expired) and, if that sign-up offer isn’t to your taste, there’s a second offer that may work better for you.

Chase British Airways Signature Card

There are two offers on the British Airways Visa card right now and these are what they look like:

Offer 1

Annual Fee: $95

Welcome bonus (Offer Expired):

  • 50,000 Bonus Avios after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.
  • An additional 25,000 Bonus Avios after you spend $10,000 on purchases within your first year of account opening
  • A further 25,000 Bonus Avios after you spend $20,000 total on purchases within your first year from account opening.

Total bonus is 100,000 Avios after spending $20,000

Earnings:

  • 3 Avios/dollar spent on British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus purchases
  • 1 Avios/dollar on all other purchases

Primary Benefits:

  • Earn a “Travel Together” ticket (companion voucher) every year you spend $30,000 on the British Airways Visa Signature card
  • No foreign transaction fees

Per Chase:

This product is available to you if you do not have this card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for this card in the past 24 months.

Offer 2

Annual Fee: $95

Welcome bonus (Offer Expired):

  • Earn 4 Avios/dollar on all purchases within the first year of card membership up to a $30,000 spend limit.

Earnings:

  • 3 Avios/dollar spent on British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus/LEVEL purchases
  • 1 Avios/dollar on all other purchases

Primary Benefits:

  • 10% off British Airways flights when you book by March 31, 2020 through the website provided in your welcome materials

Things To Note

  • Offer 1 makes no mention of the 10% discount on all British Airways bookings through March 2020 – you may still get this benefit but be aware that the offer page doesn’t mention it.
  • Offer 2 mentions that bonus Avios are awarded for bookings made with LEVEL while offer 1 makes no such mention – this may be an oversight on the part of Chase but you need to be aware of this possible distinction.
  • Offer 1 allows you to earn 100,000 Avios after spending $20,000 in the first year of card membership (on top of the Avios you normally earn from using the card)
  • Offer 2 allows you to earn 120,000 Avios after spending $30,000 in the first year of card membership

Chase British Airways Visa

Thoughts

If you’re happy putting $20,000 of spend on the British Airways Visa card then Offer 1 will be the better option for you as it will net you a minimum of 120,000 Avios (minimum 20,000 Avios from regular spend + 100,000 bonus Avios) as opposed to the 80,000 Avios you’ll earn for the same spend under the terms of Offer 2.

If you’re planning on spending $30,000 on the British Airways Visa card (enough to trigger the companion voucher) Offer 1 will be the best for you once again – under the terms of Offer 1 you’ll earn a minimum of 130,000 Avios while you’ll earn just 120,000 Avios under the terms of Offer 2

If any of your first year spend is with British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus then Offer 1 will be even better as you’ll earn more Avios from the purchases you put on the card.

However….

If you’re looking for a 1-year relationship with a card that will be good for non-bonused spend then taking up Offer 2 may not be a bad idea.

4 Avios per dollar on all spend is at least equal to a 4% rebate (the effective rebate will vary depending on what value you give Avios) and that’s not a bad return for spending in categories where most credit cards don’t offer a bonus (drugstores, department stores etc…)

Bottom Line

If you thought you’d missed the boat and that Chase had pulled its sign-up bonus on the British Airways Visa card then you’re in luck – the 100,000 bonus Avios is live and well on the Chase website.

If you’re looking for a card on which to put your non-bonused spend then the 4 Avios/dollar offer is one you should take a close look at….just be aware that this will only be good for the first year of card membership.
