2018 was an important year in the history of the Kimpton brand. The Kimpton properties were finally rolled into IHG Rewards Club and we finally got to hear IHG announcing some expansion of the brand into new destinations (like the UK and Australia). Now the Kimpton expansion has just been ramped up another level.

IHG has just confirmed that it will be opening a total of 25 new Kimpton hotels and restaurants across 20 new global destinations including properties in Bali, Barcelona, Mexico City, Paris and Shanghai.

The expansion is set to take place “in the next three to five years” and, considering the brand currently only offers a total of 67 hotels (at the time of writing) this will lead to a significant percentage increase in the number of Kimpton hotels around the world.

I’m reasonably sure that a number of these properties have been mentioned by IHG in the past so there aren’t a total of 25 new hotels being announced today but, as the current list of upcoming properties only totals to 18 (see below), at least 7 new properties included in today’s figure are new to IHG’s comments on Kimpton.

Here’s a list of currently announced new Kimpton properties:

Asia

Greater China

Indonesia

Japan

Thailand

The Caribbean

North America

United States

Bottom Line

Over the next few years we should see Kimpton grow from a brand that is highly US-centric to one that has some interesting worldwide locations that will be worth exploring.

I’m not going to pretend to be excited about seeing Kimpton open up in Glasgow or Manchester, but Shanghai, Paris and Bali are all places I’m looking forward to see Kimpton make an appearance and with the Tokyo property slated to open in 2020 (presumably in time for the Olympics) that’s another location I’ll be keen to visit the next time I’m in Japan.
