Currently, Hyatt has two hotels in the Maldives. There’s the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa (a name that never fails to make me think of someone laughing) and the Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, but going forward, there may be a third.
I say that there ‘may’ be a third because the plans for the Hyatt Regency Samarafushi Maldives that were released today confirm that the new resort is not scheduled to open until ‘late 2027’, and if you take even the slightest bit of interest in the hotel industry, you’ll know that a lot can change in 3 years (I’m still waiting for the Park Hyatt Los Angeles to open and that was announced around the same time the Romans were still rampaging around Europe and France was called Gaul).
So, what do we know about the proposed new resort?
Well, we’re told that it’s going to be a Hyatt Regency (the name is a bit of a giveaway) and that it will be located in the North Malé Atoll just 25 minutes away by speedboat from Valena International Airport in Malé.
I spent far too long trying to work out exactly where in the North Malé Atoll a 25 minute speedboat ride from the airport may put the new resort (about as far away from the airport as the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa apparently), before I found a webpage belonging to the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism which gave me the coordinates for a resort by ‘Samarafushi Pvt Ltd’,.
As that’s the only mention I can find anywhere of the word ‘Samarafushi’ and as the coordinates point to a location in the North Malé Atoll, I’m going to assume that this is the location of the proposed resort.
With Google Maps set to regular view, a pin dropped at the coordinates provided by the Maldivian government appears to put us in the middle of the Indian Ocean and doesn’t tell us very much.
But the satellite view of the same area is more revealing.
Assuming that the coordinates are correct and that this is the location of the resort, it looks like it will be very close to the Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa.
The new Hyatt Regency Maldives will sit among 24 acres (10 hectares) of land and will offer 130 beachfront, treetop, and overwater villas, which will each, apparently, have a private pool.
Aside: A treetop villa sounds like a treehouse, so I’d like to know how a treehouse can have a pool?
Other amenities that we’re told the resort will have include the following:
- A sunset bar
- A beach club
- A Japanese specialty restaurant
- An all-day-dining restaurant
- A kids club
- A diving center
- A fitness ‘pavilion’
- A yoga deck
- A spa with 8 treatment rooms
Additionally, World of Hyatt Globalists and guests who book villas with club access will also have access to a Regency Club Lounge serving complimentary refreshments.
For the time being, that’s all the information we have on the proposed new resort, and I suspect that that’s all the information that we’ll have for at least a couple of years.
When more information is made available, we’ll update this article (and probably re-publish it) and we’ll keep an eye on Hyatt’s pipeline information to see how well the construction teams are keeping to the proposed timeline (I have to admit that I will be amazed if this resort opens before 2028).
