Delta has announced that Delta Comfort + seating is being introduced as a separate fare on select routes between USA/Canada and Asia and Latin America.

I seem to have gone from rarely writing about Delta to writing about Delta a lot more frequently recently as the airline keeps making announcements about its loyalty program and its onboard products….I’m going to have to start reading up on the airline a lot more!

For flights taken on or after 19 September 2016 Delta customers on some of their routes to Asia and Latin America (as well as within those regions) will be offered Delta Comfort + as a separate fare. That being said, Delta seems to have made quite a few exceptions to this.

Per the airline the routes affected are as follows:

  • Routes between the U.S. and Canada and Latin America/Caribbean regions, excluding Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile
  • Routes between the U.S. and Canada and the Asia-Pacific region excluding China, Hong Kong and Taiwan
  • Routes between Asia-Pacific region markets, excluding China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and Latin America/Caribbean region markets, excluding Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile

That seems to be a lot of exclusions!

If the route you travel isn’t featured on the list then this is what Delta has to say:

For Delta-operated international flights not included in this update, Delta Comfort+ will continue to be sold as an add-on seating option.

I’ve had a play around with Delta’s interactive route map and, unless I’m missing something (highly likely), the only US to Asia routes that will be affected are those to Tokyo and Seoul (the others appear to be excluded).

As for the US to Latin & South America, that will affect a lot more cities that I have time to list out but the longest routes seem to be the ones excluded.

Here’s an example of this new implementation in action.

Delta Comfort + has only been in effect as a separate fare within the US and Canada since 16 May but the lead up to its implementation saw a lot of Delta flyers in open revolt about how upgrades would be processed when flying with a companion. The revolt was so loud that, amazingly, Delta actually listened and, to a degree, backed down.

It’s at this point that I normally end with a paragraph titled “Bottom Line”…. but that seems inappropriate here. “Bottom Line” is what I write when I believe I can draw a conclusion from or pass judgement on something I’ve written – I can’t really do that here. This post is really just about providing information rather than commenting on it too much…I really don’t know enough about Delta to make any useful contributions just yet….but give me time, I’m learning!
