British Airways has announced that it will add Berlin and Hamburg to the list of cities it serves from London City Airport. The airline has also announced that Berlin is to receive service from London Stansted as well.

This appears to be quite a serious move by British Airways as they’re not doing things by halves. The Berlin route will see 16 flights per week while the Hamburg route is getting 17. British Airways already operates services from London City to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt but these new additions will almost double British Airways’ operations to Germany from London City.

Per British Airways:

  • Routes will operate year round
  • Flights will be operated by BA CityFlyer
  • Routes will be operated using Embraer 190 and Saab 2000 aircraft
  • Final timings are subject to scheduling constraints

Almost as an afterthought, British Airways has added a weekly service between Stansted and Berlin and I’m guessing this has been added to make use of an aircraft that would otherwise sit on the ground – possibly related to the other new Stansted services British Airway announced in February.

London Stansted – Berlin

BA2299 STN 13:05 – 15:55 TXL (Friday only)
BA2298 TXL 21:40 – 22:30 STN (Sunday only)

This route is scheduled to start on 19 June 2016.

Afterthought or not these timings look great for anyone wanting to take a weekend trip to Berlin…a city which I happen to really like and would high recommend to anyone who hasn’t yet visited.

Bottom Line

I’m a huge fan of London City Airport and it’s great to see more flights being added to Europe. Clearly these flights are aimed, primarily, at the business traveler but the timings work well for the leisure traveler too. I’m not sure how much there is to see in Hamburg (perhaps I’ll take one of these flights to find out) but I can definitely vouch for Berlin as an interesting weekend destination….but I’d stick to the summer if you’re not a fan of snow!
