British Airways has launched a “Double Avios” promotion for flights between London and New York. If you’re not a UK resident (or don’t least have a UK address on file with the British Airways Executive Club) then you’re out of luck, but UK based Executive Club members should be able to do ok out of this.

The promotion page is here and passengers need to register for the promotion for the double Avios to be credited – simply flying isn’t enough.

The promotion is open to travelers in all cabins and, by the looks of things, to all fare classes.

If you’re not sure what a fare code is or how to find it then this link should be useful.

Double Avios Promotion Details

  • Flight must be booked by 6 April 2016
  • Travel must be complete by 30 July 2016
  • Flights must be round-trip to qualify (i.e one-way tickets will not earn double Avios)
  • Departure airport can be London Heathrow, London Gatwick or London City Airport
  • Arrival airport can be New York JFK or Newark
  • Promotion valid on a maximum of two trips
  • Promotion valid on British Airways flights only (i.e not valid on American Airlines codeshares – if you’re not sure what this means just makes sure you book your ticket through British Airways and travel on a British Airways aircraft).

IMPORTANT:

It looks as if flights that were booked before the “promotional period” (24 March – 6 April) will not count for this promotion. Per British Airways (emphasis is mine):

Eligible Participants who book their journey on a Qualifying Flight within the Promotional Period AND complete travel within the Travel Period, will qualify for a double avios bonus based on cabin of travel and Executive Club Tier status.

It goes on to say:

This promotion cannot be used retrospectively. This promotion only applies to those who register for the promotion on ba.com and make a booking between 24 March – 6 April 2016 and completes travel before 30 July 2016.

Full Terms and Conditions are on the Double Avios Promotion Page.

How Many Avios Will You Earn?

Going by the T&Cs it appears that the Double Avios appear to be calculated based on doubling all the Avios you would have earned from the flight outside of the promotion period (i.e including cabin bonus and tier bonus). This is confirmed where the T&Cs say:

[Passengers] will qualify for a double avios bonus based on cabin of travel and Executive Club Tier status.

British Airways award Avios based on the following formula:

Distance of trip x cabin Multiplier + a bonus for travelers with British Airways status.

British Airways Status Bonuses:

  • Bronze Members — 25% extra Avios
  • Silver Members — 50% extra Avios
  • Gold Members — 100% extra Avios

British Airways Cabin Multiplier:

Examples:

London Heathrow – New York JFK (return) is approximately 6,900 miles

A British Airways Bronze Status holder, travelling in Economy, in Fare Class “M” will earn the following Avios:

  • For the flight: 6,900 x 50% (Fare Class M multiplier) = 3,450 Avios
  • For having Bronze Status: 6,900 x 25% (Bronze Status bonus) = 1,725 Avios
  • Total = 5,175 Avios
  • Double Avios Promotion takes this to 10,350 Avios

A British Airways Silver Status holder traveling in Premium Economy, in Fare Class “E” will earn the following Avios:

  • For the flight: 6,900 x 100% (Fare Class E multiplier) = 6,900 Avios
  • For having Silver Status: 6,900 x 50% (Silver Status Bonus) = 3,450 Avios
  • Total = 10,350 Avios
  • Double Avios Promotion takes this to 20,700 Avios

Prices

Using the British Airways Low Fare Finder these are the fares on offer right now (I’ve used a 4-night trip as an example but prices are pretty consistent for trips of 3 – 7 nights)

Bottom Line

If you happen to be booking a flight to New York and flying by 30 July then his could be quite a nice promotion for you….and it will be especially nice if you’ve got work paying for you to fly in a premium cabin 🙂

A lot of regular British Airways flyers will travel these routes quite frequently so they should be able to earn quite a few miles from this. A British Airways Gold Card Holder flying two round trips in Discounted Business Class (a very common occurrence) will earn 69,000 Avios which is more than enough for a one-way Business Class award from London To New York.

Hopefully a lot of you will be able to make good use of this but please be sure to register for the promotion before you do anything else.
