Earlier this year British Airways nearly doubled the number of flights it offers between London City Airport and Germany when it added 33 weekly flights to Berlin and Hamburg and now the airline has announced a further expansion. For the winter 2016/17 British Airways will add an extra 34,000 seats on its routes from London City Airport to Hamburg and Dusseldorf.

The extra seats come in the form of larger planes operating some of the existing flights as well as additional daily flights.

So far some of the the Hamburg and Dusseldorf routes have been operated using BA’s Saab 2000 turboprops but these have been swapped out for 76-seat E-170 Embraer jets. Reports elsewhere suggest this change won’t be happening until 30 October but a quick look at Expertflyer shows otherwise – the changes have already been made.

The larger aircraft now flying to Hamburg will see British Airways double its capacity on the route while, not only is BA increasing the size of the aircraft flying to Dusseldorf but the airline is adding an extra weekday flight too.

From 30 October 2016 the Dusseldorf schedule looks like this (subject to change):

BA3271 LCY 07:30 – 09:40 DUS (Mon – Fri)
BA3271 LCY 07:55 – 10:05 DUS (Sat only)
BA3273 LCY 11:45 – 13:55 DUS (Mon – Fri) – New Flight
BA3275 LCY 15:25 – 17:35 DUS (Mon – Fri)
BA3277 LCY 18:55 – 21:05 DUS (Mon – Fri & Sun)

BA3270 DUS 06:45 – 07:00 LCY (Mon – Fri)
BA3270 DUS 06:55 – 07:05 LCY (Sat only)
BA3272 DUS 11:00 – 11:10 LCY (Mon – Fri) – New Flight
BA3274 DUS 14:30 – 14:40 LCY (Mon – Fri)
BA3276 DUS 18:10 – 18:25 LCY (Mon – Fri & Sun)

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ general manager commercial and customer for London City Airport is quoted as saying:

Germany is such a fast growing market we were delighted to increase our schedule earlier this year with new services to Berlin and Hamburg. Now with a larger aircraft fleet we can be more flexible and add the additional frequencies that customers have asked for.

The five German cities we serve are popular with both business and leisure customers and I’m sure they will welcome the new larger aircraft and increased schedule choices.

For some reason British Airways talks about the schedule to Dusseldorf increasing “from three to four flights a day” and talks about doubling capacity to Hamburg “on the three daily flights” both of which appear to be inaccurate statements.

British Airways operates 4 flights to Hamburg on weekdays but that drops to just one flight on Saturdays and one flight on Sundays. And the story is much the same for the Dusseldorf route where will operate 4 flights on weekdays but just the one flight on Saturdays and one flight on Sundays. Weekday ≠ daily.
