Amex offer: Earn 4 bonus points per dollar spent at Amazon [Targeted]

Just in time for Black Friday/Cyber Monday American Express is targeting cardholders for bonus Membership Rewards points on Amazon purchases through the end of the year. The number of bonus points you can earn is capped but this should still be a very nice effective rebate on top of whatever deals Amazon is offering.

Get 4 additional Membership Rewards points for each dollar spent on eligible purchases made using your enrolled Card online at amazon.com or via the US Amazon mobile app by 12/31/2019. Limit of 1,500 Membership Rewards points.

Thoughts

I value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each so the points on offer here represent an effective rebate of $22.50 and that’s pretty good going if you’re only buying things that you were planning to buy anyway.

A cap of 1,500 Membership Rewards points means that you’ll only earn bonus points on the first $375 of spending you make at Amazon (after you save the offer) so don’t spend any more than this on the Amex card on which you have saved this offer if you have another credit card offering a better return on your spending (e.g. any credit card offering at least 2% cash back or the Amazon Visa card from Chase).

Ideally, I would have liked to have this offer targeted to card_name as that already earns me 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on all spending up to $50,000 (1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply), but out of all my cards, I’m only seeing it on card_name and the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card.

I guess I’ll have to make do with earning a total of 5 points per dollar on my first $375 of spending with Amazon (not exactly a hardship!)

The terms and conditions of this offer do not appear to exclude Amazon gift cards from this promotion so if you’re targeted for this offer but don’t see anything on Amazon that you’d like to buy, you should be able to stock up on gift cards to use at a future date and still make the most of this offer.

Bottom line

Make sure you check to see if you’ve been targeted for this offer before you do any spending at Amazon.com. 1,500 bonus points may not be a big deal, but it’s a lot better than nothing and if you were planning on shopping through Amazon anyway, these are essentially free points that can be picked up with ease.
