Just a few months ago, American Airlines announced that it was adding a significant number of new routes to its operations in Austin as well as bringing back a few routes that it had operated in the past. Today, American had doubled down on its Austin expansion by announcing more new routes that are set to take flight in the fall.

American Loves Austin

Back in May, American Airlines expanded its Austin operation to include/bring back year-round services to Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, and Orlando. Last month saw American Airlines start to offer year-round flights between Austin and Tampa, as well as seasonal routes to Aspen, Destin-Fort Walton Beach, and Los Cabos. To add to all of that, we’re also expecting the airline to offer service between Austin and Washington D.C. (IAD) from mid-August.

Clearly, there’s something about Austin that American Airlines loves because it has now told us that it doesn’t plan to stop its expansion there. More new routes are on the way – both domestic and international.

Specifically, this is what we’re told to expect:

New Domestic Routes

  • El Paso (ELP) – 3x/day from 8 Sep, 7 Oct, & 2 Nov
  • Cincinnati (CVG) – 2x/day from 8 Sep
  • Indianapolis (IND) – 2x/day from 8 Sep & 7 Oct
  • Kansas City (MCI) – 2x/day from 8 Sep & 2 Nov
  • St Louis (STL) – 2x/day from 8 Sep & 7 Oct
  • Jacksonville (JAX) – Daily from 8 Sep
  • Oklahoma City (OKC) – Daily from 7 Oct
  • Reno (RNO) – Daily from 8 Sep
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) – Daily from 7 Oct
  • Tulsa (TUL) – Daily from 2 Nov

All the new domestic routes are set to be flown by Embraer 175 aircraft operated by Envoy (Republic will operate the route to Indianapolis).

New International Routes

  • Cancun (CUN) – 4x/week from 7 Oct
  • Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) – 4x/week from 7 Oct
  • Nassau (NAS) – 4x/week from 2 Nov*
  • Punta Cana, Dom. Rep. (PUJ) – 4x/week from 2 Nov
  • Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (PVR) – 3x/week from 2 Nov
  • Los Cabos (SDJ) – 3x/week from 7 Oct*

*These routes are going to operate year-round following strong bookings for what were originally summer seasonal services.

American says that all the new international routes out of Austin will be operated by Boeing 737 aircraft but it hasn’t said which of the aircraft’s variant(s) will be used. Unfortunately, I suspect that the airline may well choose to operate its MAX aircraft on one or more of these routes and that may put a few people off.

Schedules & Bookings

Ordinarily, I’d publish the schedules for all of these new routes (it’s always good to check how good or bad the timings are!) but at the time of writing, American hasn’t updated its systems to reflect the new expansion out of Austin. It shouldn’t be long, however, before all of these routes are loaded into the schedules as American says that they will all be available for purchase from 14 June.

Bottom Line

American Airlines will be expanding its operations in Austin yet again with the news that it will be offering 10 new domestic routes and 4 new international routes out of its central Texas base. With this coming just a few months after the airline announced its first round of Austin expansion, I don’t recall ever seeing American expand at a single airport quite so quickly. It’s actually quite impressive.
