Following on from the offer for ITA Airways spending that we saw launched yesterday, Amex is back today with a new airline offer, and this time it’s for Taiwan’s EVA Air. The offer appears to be widely available, so if you’re making plans head to Asia between now and next November and are happy to pay before the end of the year, this could be an easy way to save a little cash.

Quick thoughts

As usual, it’s a shame that this is limited to departures from the US, but this is still a pretty good offer to be targeted for.

$1,200 isn’t much to spend on air travel (especially if you’re heading across the Pacific, if you’re a family, or if booking a premium cabin), and when you add in the fact that the spending requirement doesn’t have to be met in a single transaction and that you only have to book and pay (not fly) by the end of the year, this becomes an offer that should be relatively easy to use.

As we seem to have this offer on every Amex card that we hold (business and consumer cards and that includes all co-branded cards), this is clearly not an offer that’s being narrowly targeted.

The good news is that this includes the Platinum Card® from American Express, so a lot of readers should be able to pair the $180 saving with the 5 points/dollar that the Platinum Card offers on up to $500,000 of spending made directly with airlines or flights booked through Amex Travel (1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply).

That would be a haul of at least 6,000 points which we value at $90.

If you don’t have a consumer Platinum Card (remember that the Business Platinum Card® from American Express only offer a bonus for airline spending made through Amex Travel and not for spending made directly with airlines), the next best card to use would probably be the American Express® Green Card which earns 3 points/dollar on all eligible travel spending. Failing that, your fallback should be the Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express which earns 2 points/dollar on the first $50,000 of spending per year (1 point/dollar thereafter), and if you don’t have that card either, you’re doing the miles and points game all wrong 🙂

Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The American Express® Green Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom line

American Express is now targeting select cardholders for a saving of up to 15% off bookings made with EVA Air. Make sure you read the terms and conditions of the offer carefully before you book (not all spending with the airlines will qualify to trigger the credit) and make sure you book a trip originating in the US using the US versions of the EVA Air website.
