2019 is British Airways’ centenary year and the airline has been celebrating this fact with a series of promotions and nostalgic throwbacks that first started to appear back in January.

So far we’ve seen the rollout of a number of the airline’s heritage liveries (like Negus), a 100th birthday commercial and a series of £200 roundtrip fares on a number of the airline’s long-haul routes but, of late, 100th birthday promotions have been thin on the ground….until now.

British Airways has announced that it will be offering 100 ‘return seats’ for just £100 to each of 3 British Airways leisure destinations which the airline serves out of London City Airport.

The airline hasn’t actually said what the 3 leisure destinations are but it has confirmed that the promotion will start next week and that the public will also have the chance to win a number of other prizes.

Here’s how BA has framed the news:

“To mark the airline’s 100th birthday there will be 100 return seats for just £100 on offer to each of three selected British Airways’ sunshine destinations from London City.

To celebrate a mobile ice cream van will drive round East London, setting up at Westfield Stratford and ExCel London over the course of three days next week.

Cabin crew will give away free ice creams and picture postcards with the chance to win a number of prizes, including a five-star holiday to Skiathos, flights to Europe and hotel stays, and lots of giveaways including luggage tags and beach balls.

The ice cream van will set off on Thursday May 16 and park at London Excel before moving onto Westfield, Stratford on May 17 and 18.”

In an addendum to the announcement British Airways has confirmed that the other major prizes on offer will include flights plus hotel to The Algarve, Majorca and Monaco, flights to Split, Nice, Majorca, Faro and the Greek Islands, flight upgrades to Club Europe and Beach Ibiza experiences

Disappointingly, from the way the announcement of the promotion has been phrased, it sounds like this may only be open to anyone fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to encounter the BA ice cream van….and that would rule out quite a lot of people.

Hopefully there will be an opportunity for those of us nowhere near the vicinity of East London to participate in this promotion but, considering all the prizes center around City Airport (in the heart of East London), I’m not holding out much hope.
