If you fly with any sort of frequency you’ve probably been on an aircraft that has had to “go around” (abort a landing) for one reason or another and, although on most occasions it’s nothing serious at all, it can still be a little disconcerting….especially if you’re not sure what’s going on.

I’ve been on a United Airlines flight that aborted a landing into Las Vegas because an aircraft in front of us was taking its time exiting the runway and, as we pulled up and banked back around, we were told told to take yet more evasive action because of a nearby military aircraft.

On that occasion I was especially grateful for United’s Channel 9 which allows passengers to listen in to the conversations between air traffic control and the pilots – I heard everything that was going on so knew that there wasn’t a major issue anywhere. I’m not sure all my fellow passengers were just as informed!

It doesn’t matter how big the aircraft is, if it’s best to go around then that’s what the pilots do and that’s exactly what a British Airways crew seem to have done here.

A YouTube-er going by the handle AvgeekYVR has managed to capture a great video of a British Airways A380 aborting its landing just a feet from the ground in Vancouver. I’ve absolutely no idea why the pilots pulled out of the landing (I’m sure they had an excellent reason) but I just hope they let the passengers know what was going on as soon as it was safe to do so.

A truly impressive video and a rare catch – you don’t see A380s going around on a regular basis and, when one does, you certainly don’t normally get to see it in a video as clear as this one.

If you watch the video to the end you’ll see that the aircraft went around and landed just fine at the second time of asking.
