American Airlines has recently made a series of announcements regarding coronavirus testing for destinations like Chile, the Caribbean, and the UK and now it has announced that it will be the first airline to expand access to at-home coronavirus testing for all flights to US locations that have COVID-19 related restrictions, including Puerto Rico.
From 9 December 2020, American Airlines will offer all customers traveling any US city, state, or territory that has implemented COVID-19 related travel restrictions, access to at-home testing through LetsGetChecked for travel on or after 12 December 2020.
Current cities, states, and territories with COVID-19 travel restrictions include:
- Alaska
- Connecticut
- District of Columbia
- Chicago
- Hawaii
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- New Hampshire
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Puerto Rico
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
Customers traveling within the United States can stay up to date with local travel requirements through the new American Airlines travel tool. The tool provides travelers with a destination-specific overview of local rules and laws including things like the need for face coverings, any health documentation that will be required, and details of any quarantine requirements.
The LetsgetChecked test costs $129 and although it’s an “at-home” test it requires travelers to have their test observed by a medical professional via virtual visit – test results are expected in 48 hours on average.
The procedure for testing seems straightforward:
- Order your kit (5+ days before flight departure is recommended)
- Schedule a UPS pickup for your sample
- Activate your test online
- Join an observation call with a LetsGetChecked care professional
- Collect your sample (within 3 days of your flight)
- Return your sample for testing
- Receive your results on your secure online account
You’ll find more specifics about the LetsGetChecked test on this webpage.
Bottom Line
If it looks like you’ll be traveling to an area of the United States which has imposed COVID-19 related travel restrictions American Airlines would like to help out. From 9 December (for travel from 12 December), the airline is offering all of its customers access to at-home COVID testing from LetsGetChecked with the cost of testing borne by the passenger.
St. Croix also requires a negative test.
