It was pretty good news when, back in February, American Airlines announced that it would be replacing the ageing 767 that operated the Chicago – Manchester route with a brand new 787-8 Dreamliner complete with a Great Business Class cabin and improved entertainment for Economy Class.

Unfortunately the news didn’t remain good for too long. The Dreamliner kept being withdrawn from the route as it suffered what appeared to be an unprecedented number of maintenance issues and things got frustrating for passengers.

I got quite a few emails asking if I knew what was going on (I didn’t) and there was quite a bit of disappointment going around when passengers realised that they had paid to fly in American’s latest Business Class seats only to end up flying in a considerably more mediocre cabin.

The Dreamliner was supposed to reappear on the Chicago – Manchester (UK) route in time for the 2017 summer season but, according to the latest schedule update from American, the route will now continue to be served by a Boeing 767….at least through to the beginning of October which is as far out as you can book American Airlines seats.

Here’s the schedule for the route:

AA054 ORD 19:10 – 08:55+1 day MAN (Daily)
AA055 MAN 12:20 – 14:55 ORD (Daily)

Bottom Line

If you’re booked on this route and thought that you would be flying in the Dreamliner then think again and, more importantly, check your seat assignments – they will almost certainly have changed.

If you’re thinking of flying this route then I wouldn’t rule it out just because of the aircraft swap…but I’d make sure that you’re getting a decent deal because the Dreamliner and the 76 are not in any way comparable experiences.
