Iberia is running a very interesting Valentine’s Day promotion in which it’s selling gift cards with a discount of 25%. With Iberia gift cards valid for travel on any Iberia operated route this is essentially a 25% discount on Iberia air fares….but there are conditions you need to be aware of.

The first thing I should point out is that the Iberia website seems to be inaccessible right now thanks to unusually high traffic (I wonder why?!)

As a result I haven’t been able to verify the terms and conditions outside of what I found in a Spanish language press release so anyone buying gift cards should check carefully what they’re signing up for.

Here’s what Google translate makes of the press release:

Iberia has launched a very special promotion for Valentine’s Day. You will have a 25% discount on the purchase of your gift card at www.iberia.com, which you can use to more than 130 destinations in the Iberia Group’s network.

Just go to www.iberia.com, click on Valentine’s Gift, and customize the card. You can print the gift or send it by email. It’s that simple, without leaving the site, without queues, or rushing.

As far as the terms and conditions of the gift card promotion go, this is what Google translate has to say:

These gift cards are valid for flights operated by Iberia and other group companies with connecting flights – Iberia Express and Iberia regional Air Nostrum – provided that there is a flight operated by Iberia on the route.

Tickets can be purchased until March 15, 2019 for flights until December 31, 2019.

So….

  • Buy gift cards with a 25% discount
  • Use the gift cards for travel on flights operated by Iberia
  • Gift cards must be used by 15 march 2019
  • Travel must be completed by 31 December 2019

Once Iberia.com is once again accessible there are two very specific things you should be sure to check:

  1. Do you need to have a Spanish address to buy the gift cards?
  2. Do the flights booked using the gift cards have to originate in Spain?

If the answer to either of those questions is ‘yes’ then this will be a considerably less useful promotion than it sounds.

Also be aware that gift cards offer considerably fewer customer protections than credit cards so it would be advisable to part-pay for any trips with a credit card that will insure against eventualities such as trip delay, trip cancellation, baggage loss etc…

Iberia’s long-haul network

Back in July 2018 I wrote a post showing all the long-haul routes that Iberia currently offers and with the airline operating services to/from cities like Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Boston, Chicago, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo (as well as a lot of others) there’s a great choice of destinations from which to choose.

In addition, Iberia is now operating its new Airbus A350 on a number of long-haul routes routes and flying its refitted A330s on most of the others so the Business Class cabins on offer are very good indeed….and Premium Economy isn’t bad either.

If you can get into Iberia.com and if the terms and conditions don’t contain any nasty surprises this promotion could offer a great way of saving quite a bit of cash.

Good luck to anyone trying to buy these gift cards – let me know how you get on.
