American Express appears to have launches a significant number of new targeted offers today, but there aren’t many new travel-related offers appearing in our accounts. Still, if you’re in the market for some overpriced luggage, this offer for spending with TUMI may help ease the pain on your wallet.

Quick thoughts
Ok, let’s get this out of the way first …
I used to be a big fan of TUMI and it was my go-to brand for luggage for years. Then the company was taken over by Samsonite, the excellent warranty was torn up, the quality of the products went down, the quality of customer service went down, and the prices went up, so this isn’t a brand that I now like.
My brand of choice is Briggs and Riley (because I know their fantastic warranty means something) so I will not be using this offer.
Having said all of that, I see enough TUMI bags every time I travel to know that the brand still had a strong fanbase, so perhaps this targeted offer will work for some of them.
We value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each so, effectively, we’re being offered a rebate of $75 if we spend at least $250 with TUMI.
That sounds quite good (who doesn’t like a rebate of up to 30%?), but given the high cost of most things that TUMI sells that’s not how high the rebate percentage is likely to go, so no one should be looking at this offer and using it as a reason to make a new purchase.
If you already had plans to buy a piece of TUMI luggage, this offer could be seen as nice, unexpected bonus, but everyone else should probably ignore it … and consider Travelpro or Briggs & Riley for their next luggage purchase!
Targeted cards
I have this offer targeted to all my consumer Membership Rewards cards, so if I had any plans to shop with TUMI (which I don’t), I would save it to the Platinum Card® from American Express to make the most of the card’s good purchase and returns protection.
A lot of cardholders may have hoped to have this targeted to The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express as that would earn them 2 points/dollar* on their eligible TUMI spending, but it doesn’t look like business Membership Rewards cards are being targeted for this deal.
*This card earns 2 points/dollar on up to $50,000 of eligible spending per year and 1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply.
Bottom line
American Express has launched a new targeted offer which will allow select cardholders to earn 5,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when they spend at least $250 with TUMI.
For me, it would take a lot more than a 5,000 point incentive before I bought something from TUMI, but I appreciate that others may feel differently, so let’s hope a few people reading this can make the most of the offer.
