United Airlines has announced that it has expanded its menu selections of its onboard “Snack Shop” and “Bistro” as well as creating a new menu for customers flying from Canada to the US. The airline also says that, starting this summer, it will be offering Wheatley as its exclusive brand of Vodka on all of its worldwide flights.

before I go any further it’s important to remember that these are all buy-on-board options that United will be offering in its Economy Class cabins

United’s New Snack Shop Offerings

United claims that it will be the first airline to feature Think Jerky on board and it will be introducing the brand’s Sweet Chipotle beef flavor jerky first.

Apparently “Think Jerky” only uses grass-fed beef and was added to the menu in response to customer requests for a new meat-based snack onboard.

What was the old meat-based snack that’s made way? Anyone know?

In addition to grass-fed beef jerky customers will be offered the following:

  • A new organic nut mix from Nuts.com
  • An updated Cheese and Crackers Box – contains items like Everything ParmCrisps™
  • Two cheese options

Also, flyers can now buy a newly designed “Classic Snackbox” that, United says, “has been updated to have a more ‘Americana’ flavor with items like a SMASHMALLOW® root beer float marshmallow, pretzels, Oreo cookies, and Twizzlers“.

The nut mix may be ok but none of the other items sounds particularly appealing to me and I’m not sure I’d eat any of them even it if they were offered for free.

Why can’t there be a few healthier snack options made available? I can feel my arteries clogging up just reading about these new menu items!

New Breakfast & Lunch Options Through “Bistro on Board”

United’s “Bistro on Board” menu now offers new breakfast and lunch meal choices.

Per the airline:

The biscuit breakfast sandwich, another United exclusive, is a hot entrée selection that features a 100% cage-free home style fried egg.

For customers who prefer a cold breakfast entree, the new Mixed Berry Breakfast Bowl comes with fresh ingredients like berries, pecans, and granola and is served with a Chobani® Mixed Berry Greek yogurt drink.

For lunch, the Mezze Sampler has been updated with a new wheat berry salad that comes with quinoa, edamame and corn.

Ok…now we’re getting somewhere. The biscuit breakfast sounds like a recipe for a heart-attack at 30,000ft but the other two items definitely sound promising.

Canada Get’s Its Own Menu Items

Apparently customers have been clamouring for more “regional flavors” on their United flights so the airline has listened and decided that Canadian flavors are a good place to start (who knew Canadian flavors were noticeably different to American flavors?)

Apparently Canadian chefs were brought in to figure out what passengers would want and this is what they came up with:

For breakfast, a Maple Ham Breakfast Sandwich that pairs Black Forest ham with maple butter on a croissant is now available.

For lunch or dinner, a Hummus Sampler and a Forty Creek Barbecue Burger that features Forty Creek whiskey barbecue sauce are also available along with a Sun-dried Tomato Pesto Chicken Wrap.

These options are being served on “most flights over three hours from Canada to the U.S.

I don’t really have too much to say about this except to point out that I’m pretty sure a “hummus sampler” isn’t really a “Canadian flavor”….although the fact that some in the US appear to think that it is would go a long way to explaining quite a few things…..
