Gelson’s is a grocery store chain that you’ll find in various locations across Southern California and if you have one of these stores in your neighborhood (or on your way to work) there are two targeted Amex offers available right now that should be of interest.

  • Offer valid in store at Gelson’s. Excludes all orders placed online for delivery and in-store pick up, online pharmacy orders, and Viktor Benes Bakery, Renaud’s Bakery and Little Cakes locations.

Thoughts

I value Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each so, effectively, Amex is offering $30 back with one deal and $20 back with the other….and that’s not bad considering how little work you have to put in to earn these rebates.

These two targeted Gelson’s Amex offers are very similar to the offers we saw appear around this time last year and, although this year’s offers aren’t quite as generous, it’s still incredibly easy to get good value out of them.

There are three key things to know about Gelson’s and this offer:

  1. Gelson’s isn’t a cheap grocery store
  2. Gelson’s sells gift cards
  3. Gift cards should trigger these offers (they triggered them last year).

Unless you already do your grocery shopping at Gelson’s I don’t suggest you allow these offers to tempt you into buying groceries at your local store – a lot of the items Gelson’s sells can be bought for less at other neighborhood grocery stores.

Last year Amex was offering 1,500 Membership Rewards points for spending $60+ at Gelson’s and, just like this year, the offer could be used twice. At the time I wasn’t sure if $60 or a sum above $60 was needed to trigger the offer so I didn’t take any chances and I purchased two $60 Amazon gift cards and two bottles of water (which I needed) across two separate transactions…

…and this was enough to earn me the 3,000 Membership Rewards points that were on offer.

I intend to do the same thing again this year 🙂

It’s worth remembering that Amex treats offers which earn Membership Rewards points and offers which earn cash statement credits as separate offers even if they relate to the same store/vendor so if you have been targeted for both versions of this offer you can make the most of both – you can earn 2,000 Membership Rewards points and get $20 in statement credits.

Use The Right Credit Cards

If you’ve been targeted for these offers it’s likely that you’ll find them targeted to a number of your American Express cards so it’s going to be important that you load the offers on to cards that will earn you the most points (or cashback) for your spending.

In the case of the Membership Rewards points offer, the best cards to load this offer to will be the American Express Gold card (which earns 4 points/dollar at US supermarkets) or the Amex EveryDay Preferred card (which earns up to 4.5 points/dollar at US supermarkets).

In the case of the statement credit offer, the best cards to load this offer to will be the Blue Cash Preferred card (which earns 6% back at US supermarkets) or the Blue Cash EveryDay card (which earns 3% back at US supermarkets). If you don’t hold either of those cards perhaps the Hilton Honors Surpass card can help you out (6 Hilton Honors points/dollar at US supermarkets).

Bottom Line

If you live in SoCal and withing striking distance of a Gelson’s store you’re unlikely to find an easier set of Amex offers with which to earn statement credits and Membership Rewards points. With Gelson’s selling gift cards for a variety of gas stations and restaurants (as well as Amazon.com) these Amex offers are effectively offering you rebates on prepaid spending….just make sure you buy gift cards that you know you’ll use with ease.
