Update: Some or all of the offers discussed below may have expired
Over the weekend, Rakuten has been offering up to 15% cash back (15 Membership Points/dollar) at various retailers but while there were a few good deals available here and there, a lot of major retailers were noticeable by their absence. Today, things are a little different. The cash back and points on offer may not be quite as high as 15%/15x, but a significant number of major retailers have come out to play.
Between Bloomingdales, Macy’s, and Saks 5th Avenue the department stores are well represented today, a wide variety of clothing retailers are participating, and there are a number of cash back deals on offer that will stack well with the offers that are being targeted to a range of Amex cards.
In all, there are over 200 outlets offering at least 10% cash back today and some of the popular are listed out below:
- Calvin Klein
- Charles Tyrwhitt
- Columbia Sportswear
- Dell Outlet
- Expedia (up to 10%)
- Finish Line
- Foot Locker
- Forever 21
- Groupon (up to 10%)
- Harvey Nichols
- Ink Cartridges
- Kate Spade New York
- New Balance
- Saks Fifth
- Saks OFF 5TH
- Under Armour
- 7 For All Mankind
There’s no trick to earning the cashback or Membership Rewards points on offer (you just click through to the retailers using the links on Rakuten), but there are two things you should keep in mind:
Firstly, before making any purchases, make sure you check what Amex offers are available in your American Express account – a number of retailers participating in the Rakuten promotion also frequently appear among the Amex offers I’ve been seeing this year (e.g. Macy’s, Nike, etc…). Load your Amex card with any relevant offers and then use that card to pay when you’ve clicked through to the retailer(s) and finished your shopping.
Secondly, if you don’t have any relevant Amex offers to use, make sure you use a credit card that will reward you well. Most miles and points credit cards will only offer 1 point or mile per dollar at a lot of the participating retailers so this would be a good opportunity to use a good cash back card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited® Credit Card (1.5% cashback on all spending) or the Blue Cash EveryDay® Card from American Express (3% cash back on up to $6,000 of online spending at US retailers – terms apply)…
…or to use a card on which you’re currently working towards a strong welcome offer (e.g. if you recently signed up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Credit Card).
Most importantly, don’t forget that the 10% cash back deal is only available TODAY ONLY and that if you’re new to Rakuten, you can sign up using this referral link and earn a bonus of $25 cash back or 2,500 Membership Rewards Points (on top of any other cash back/points you may earn).
