While IHG is only currently running a promotion for January and while Hyatt and Marriott haven’t yet shown any interesting in launching global promotions of their own, this is a reminder that Hilton Honors appears to be the only major hotel loyalty program that’s currently running a promotion that runs for a significant part of this year.

The promotion

Register (here) and earn 2,000 bonus points on every stay and a further 500 bonus points when you use Hilton’s Digital Key option.

This promotion is currently live and is running through 1 May 2024.

Key terms

  • Offer valid for stays completed January 1 – May 1, 2024 at any hotel or resort within the Hilton Portfolio.
  • Hilton Honors members must first register at HiltonHonors.com/PointsPlus prior to completing a stay within the Promotion period.
  • Registered Hilton Honors members checking in before January 1, 2024, will receive Bonus Points for their stay if the stay is completed on or after January 1, 2024, and prior to or on May 1, 2024.
  • Registered Hilton Honors members will earn 2,000 Bonus Points per stay during the promotion period.
  • Additionally, 500 Bonus Points per stay are awarded when using Digital Key during the stay. 500 Points are awarded to the Honors member making the reservation, at a maximum of once per stay for one room on the reservation only, regardless of how many times Digital Key is successfully used during the stay. The Digital Key must be successfully issued during the stay to be eligible.
  • There is no limit to the total amount of Bonus Points that may be earned during the promotion period with this offer.
  • Bonus Points do not count toward elite tier qualification.
  • Please allow six to eight weeks from the completion of your stay for Bonus Points to appear in your account.
  • A ‘stay’ is defined as the total number of consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, whether or not a guest checks out and checks back in again.
  • Offer is not valid for groups and cannot be combined with other select offers.

Full terms and conditions can be found on the promotion page.

Multiple short stays rewarded most

This is a promotion that rewards those who make multiple short stays rather than those who make a small number of long stays so the nature of your travels will dictate just how lucrative this promotion is for you.

To give an arbitrary example, someone who makes three 3-night stays and a single 1-night stay (for 10 nights in total during the promotion period) while accessing their Digital Key on each stay, would earn 10,000 bonus points in this promotion (4 stays @ 2,000 points each and 4 x Digital Key bonuses @ 500 points each).

Someone who makes one stay of 10 nights and who access their Digital Key on their stay would earn just 2,500 bonus points (1 stay @ 2,000 points/stay and 1 x Digital Key bonuses @ 500 points).

If you want to maximize points earnings in this promotion you should look to break up any longer trips into multiple stays if possible.

I value Hilton Honors points at 0.4 cents/point so for me, this promotion is essentially offering a maximum rebate of $10 per stay and that’s not particularly exciting.

It’s better than nothing if you were already planning on staying with Hilton before 1 May 2024, but it’s not going to be tempting enough to get anyone to change their plans or to make new bookings.

Elite bonuses & credit card points make things better

On its own, this promotion doesn’t really impress, but once you start taking into account elite bonuses and the bonus points that will come your way if you pay for a stay with a Hildon co-branded credit card, the number of points that you can earn start to look a lot more worthwhile.

At the higher end of the elite ladder, a Diamond elite member spending $600 on a stay at a full-service property and paying with a Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card (the card that comes with Diamond elite status), could earn a total of 22,900 points from their stay:

  • 6,000 base points (at 10 points/dollar).
  • 6,000 elite points (100% bonus for being a top-tier elite).
  • 8,400 points from their credit card (14 points/dollar).
  • 2,000 bonus points from the first part of the promotion.
  • 500 bonus points from the Digital Key part of the promotion.

A little lower down the elite ladder, a mid-tier Gold member spending $600 on their stay at a full-service property and choosing to pay with a card_name (which gifts cardholders Gold elite status), would earn 20,500 points from their stay:

  • 6,000 base points (at 10 points/dollar)
  • 4,800 elite points (80% bonus for holding Gold elite status)
  • 7,200 points from their credit card (12 points/dollar)
  • 2,000 bonus points from the first part of the promotion.
  • 500 bonus points from the Digital Key part of the promotion.

Continuing to use my earlier valuation of 0.4 cents/points, these points totals represent effective rebates of between $82 and $92.

That’s not a bad effective rebate considering Diamond elite status and Gold elite status aren’t particularly hard to come by if you have access to US-issued credit cards.

Note: All information about the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom line

Whether or not you think you’ll be staying at a Hilton property in the first four months of 2024, you should be registering for this promotion.

Plans change and you never know when you’ll find yourself unexpectedly at a Hilton property and it would be a shame to leave a stack of points on the table just because you didn’t take a few seconds to register in advance of your stay.

Overall, this isn’t a promotion that’s likely to change anyone’s plans, but it is one in which it should be easy to pick up a few easy bonus points to go alongside the points you’ll earn from elite status and the Hilton co-branded credit cards.
