Yesterday I wrote about 6 great Amex offers that are currently available for hotel stays at brands like Kimpton, Hilton and St Regis and now I’ve just noticed a very good Amex Offer for anyone doing some grocery shopping in Southern California.
Gelson’s is a grocery store chain that’s found exclusively in Southern California…and it can sometimes be on the expensive side. Personally I prefer Trader Joe’s and Pavilions (Safeway) but this Amex offer is likely to see me in a Gelson’s very soon.
There are two versions of the current Gelson’s Amex offer – one which offers a cash rebate….
…and one which offers Membership Rewards points:
The latter is easily the better offer (I’ll show you why in a moment) but it’s the fact that this offer can be used twice that makes it extra good.
Here are the headline terms and conditions:
Get 1,500 additional Membership Rewards points by using your enrolled Card to make a single purchase of $60+ in-store at Gelson’s by 3/31/2019. Limit 3,000 Membership Rewards points
Offer valid in store and on Click & Collect orders placed online but picked up in store. Excludes all orders placed online for delivery, online pharmacy orders, and Viktor Benes Bakery and Renaud’s Bakery locations.
The full terms and condition are on the offer page
$15 back on a $60 spend is a very nice 25% rebate and if you’re not into collecting miles and points that’s quite obviously the offer you should go for (although if you’re not into miles and points I’m not sure why you’re reading TFM! 🙂 ).
For miles & points collectors the second offer is better…and by quite a margin.
I value Membership Rewards Points at 1.5 cents each and, as far as valuations go, that’s a pretty cautious/conservative valuation.
What this valuation means is that the 1,500 Membership Rewards Points offer is effectively a $22.50 rebate on a spend of $60 (37.5%) and that’s a fantastic deal for something as mundane as groceries.
Making The Most Of This Offer
There are two key things to remember if you’re really going to make the most of this offer:
- Don’t add the offer to the first Amex Card you see it available on – check to see if Amex has loaded the offer on to a card that offers a grocery store bonus – like the Amex EveryDay cards
- Try to avoid buying any of the items that Gelson’s has a tendency to overprice (i.e don’t buy any items you know you can get cheaper elsewhere) as buying overpriced items pretty much defeats the object of the exercise here.
- Make sure you use this offer twice (for two separate transactions)
I’ve been targeted for this offer on multiple American Express cards but I’ve been careful to add it to my Amex EveryDay card which earns me 2.4 points/dollar on the first $6,000 spent at US supermarkets (providing I make 20 or more purchases on the card in the billing period).
It’s been a while since I’ve visited a Gelson’s store so I can’t remember if they sell gift cards or, if they do, what gift cards they sell but it’s interesting to note that the offer terms don’t appear to exclude gift card purchases.
Don’t go crazy and buy items you wouldn’t have bought had you not been targeted for this offer (that’s a great way to waste money) and make sure you load the offer in to the Amex Card from which you’ll derive the greatest earnings/benefit
If you live in SoCal then this is an offer you should be looking out for as it offers an incredibly good way to save between $30 and $45 on shopping that you probably would be doing anyway.
