Earlier this month UK-based Avios and Virgin Flying Club miles collectors got the bad news that a long running source of easy points looked like it was going to dry up. Tesco announced that their offer of 150 Clubcard Points (convertible to 360 Avios or 375 Flying Club miles) for spending £50 on gift cards was going to end on 25 September and no details were given on what, if anything was going to replace the offer. Now we know.
Tesco Improves Its Gift Card Offer
A quick look in my local Tesco this afternoon revealed that, far from cutting back on the points earning opportunity, Tesco have actually made it even easier to collect Clubcard points (and therefore Avios and Flying Club miles) through spend on gift cards.
Instead of customers having to spend £50 to earn 150 Clubcard points the new offer only requires a £25 spend for 75 Club card points!
This is great news!
I’ve lost count of the number of times £75 in gift cards would have worked just fine for me but I ended up feeling compelled to purchase the full £100 just to make sure I got all the Clubcard points available.
It will also help out shoppers who get some of the regular money off coupons that Tesco likes to send out.
If you mainly use Tesco for gift cards and not your actual weekly shopping then gift cards are a good way to build up your spend to get the discount – in the case of the above coupon I would buy £100 of gift cards and a little over £10 worth of shopping and that would net me around 310 Clubcard points (744 Avios or 775 Flying Club miles) for a net spend of £100….but I would still have the £100 of gift cards to use.
But not all Tesco coupons are for a £100 spend. I’ve seen coupons for £60, £75 & £80 spend so, while in the past you would still have to buy the full £100 of gift cards if you wanted to trigger the discount and not leave any Clubcard points on the table, now you can buy £25 less and still end up with the same result.
That may not seem like a big deal but the whole point of the miles & points game is to spend as little money as possible for the biggest possible returns…..so I like any deal that means I can leave some cash in my wallet (metaphorically speaking…naturally I use a credit card that earns me points when I buy the gift cards 🙂 )
Note: Tesco is advertising this promotion is valid through 16 October so we’ll have to wait and see what the grocer introduces after that date.
