American Express is currently targeting cardholders for two good offers for spending at Dell and depending on which credit cards you find these offers targeted (and if a hypothesis of mine works), these offers may turn out to be a lot better than they first appear to be.

Using The Right Cards For These Offers

Note: The first offer is only being targeted at Amex Business cardholders so you’ll need to have an American Express Business card to stack both of these offers.

There are a variety of cards on which you’ll probably find these offers but there are two cards in particular that will return the better deals.

Blue Business Plus

The Blue Business Plus credit card from American Express offers 2 points/dollar on all spending up to $50,000/year so if, like me, you can load these offers on to this card you’ll end up with earnings of 3 points/dollar (assuming you haven’t already spent $50,000 on this card) and a discount of up to $1,500 on whatever equipment you buy.

I value Amex Membership Rewards points at 1.5 cents each so, effectively, this offer is giving me a 10% rebate (in cash) up to $1,500 and a further rebate of 4.5% in Membership Rewards points.

Business Platinum Card

The Business Platinum Card from American Express earns 1 point/dollar on spending made with Dell so this will be doubled to 2 points/dollar if you have been targeted for the bonus points offer.

Also, the Business Platinum Card offers two $100 Dell credits every year (one for use between January and June and the other for use between July and December) so, if you’ve been targeted for both Dell offers on this card your effective earnings will look like this:

A 10% cash rebate (up to $1,500), a $100 rebate (courtesy of the Platinum Card’s Dell benefit) and a further rebate of 3% in Membership Rewards points.

You May Be Able To Earn/Save A Lot More

Offer 1 clearly states that you have to shop at dell.com/amex to trigger the extra Membership Rewards point but it still may be possible to earn a lot more cash back through an online shopping portal.

I have the Rakuten Chrome plug-in installed so I never miss a good deal when shopping and this is what I see when I enter dell.com/amex into my web browser:

Rakuten is offering me 12% cash back (at the time of writing).

When I activate the cash back option, the Rakuten site navigates me back to the Dell/Amex webpage and confirms that the 12% cash back has been activated…

…so there’s a chance (there’s no guarantee) that it’s possible to earn a further 12% cash back on top of the two Amex offers discussed above as well as on top of the $100 statement credit that’s offered by the Business Platinum Card.

It’s worth remembering that you can elect to take Rakuten cash back in the form of Membership Rewards points (1% cash back = 1 point) so, assuming the 12% cash back tracks, a Business Platinum cardholder may be able to stack the following:

  • 10% cash rebate (up to $1,500)
  • $100 statement credit (Platinum Dell benefit)
  • 14 Membership Rewards Points/dollar (Platinum Card + Offer 1 + Rakuten)

That could be a fantastic deal for anyone who needs to replace a laptop/computer/tablet.

Note: Don’t forget that Rakuten is running a very good introductory offer right now (link)

Bottom Line

Given the right Amex cards, these offers can be a very nice way of saving some cash and boosting a Membership Rewards balance but if the Rakuten cash back works as well, this may be one of the more rewarding set of Amex offers we’ve seen so far this year…it’s just a shame I’m locked-in to the Apple universe 🙂
