American Express has updated the welcome bonuses on four of the Delta SkyMiles credit cards that it issues and has announced that the new offers are only going to be available through 28 October. Two personal and two business cards are seeing changes made to their welcome offers so now may be the time to consider one of these cards if Delta is your airline of choice.

Delta SkyMiles Gold Card

The Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card now offers the following welcome bonus (expires 28 October 2020):

  • Earn 50,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months of card membership (find out how to apply)

Note: This welcome offer is not available to applicants who currently have this card or who have had this or previous versions of this card in the past.

For someone only looking to dip a toe into the world of Delta’s American Express cards to see how well one may work for them, the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card is probably going to be a good place to start because:

  1. The annual fee is waived in the first year (a $99 annual fee applies from year 2)
  2. It offers a number of key benefits:
    • A free checked bag for up to 9 people traveling on the same reservation
    • 20% back on select in-flight purchases
    • Priority boarding
    • $100 Delta flight credit after spending $10,000
  3. It allows cardholders to earn bonus miles in select spending categories:
    • 2 miles/dollar on Delta purchases
    • 2 miles/dollar at restaurants
    • 2 miles /dollar at U.S. supermarkets
    • 1 mile/dollar on all other spending

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Card

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum card now offers the following welcome bonus (expires 28 October 2020):

  • Earn 60,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of card membership
  • 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (find out how to apply)

Note: This welcome offer is not available to applicants who currently have this card or who have had this or previous versions of this card in the past.

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum card is aimed at travelers who travel with Delta frequently enough to be able to use the additional benefits that the card offers (over an above what the Gold card offers) but who don’t fly Delta enough to warrant the high-end Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card. For a $250 annual fee, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Express Card offers:

  1. Key benefits:
    • A domestic Main Cabin round-trip companion certificate each year upon renewal
    • Access to Delta Sky Clubs for $39/visit
    • Status Boost – earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQM) for every $25,000 spent on the card in a year (up to a maximum of 20,000 MQM)
    • Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) waiver for Silver, Gold, and Platinum Medallion Status after a cardholder spends $25,000 in a year on the card.
    • Valuable trip delay insurance
    • A credit to cover the cost of Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
    • A free checked bag for up to 9 people traveling on the same reservation
    • 20% back on select in-flight purchases
    • Priority boarding
  2. Bonus miles in select spending categories:
    • 3 miles/dollar on Delta purchases
    • 3 miles/dollar on hotel spending
    • 2 miles/dollar at restaurants
    • 2 miles /dollar at U.S. supermarkets
    • 1 mile/dollar on all other spending

Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card

The Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card now offers the following welcome bonus (expires 28 October 2020):

  • Earn 60,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months of card membership (find out how to apply)

Note: This welcome offer is not available to applicants who currently have this card or who have had this or previous versions of this card in the past.

Just as with the personal version of this card, the Delta SkyMiles Gold Business Card is primarily designed for someone only looking to dip a toe into the world of Delta’s American Express cards to see how well one may work for them, but although it comes with a lot of the same features as the personal card, the shopping categories that earn bonuses for the business version of the card are noticeably different.

As with the personal card, the annual fee for the business card is waived in the first year (a $99 annual fee applies from year 2)

  1. It offers a number of key benefits:
    • A free checked bag for up to 9 people traveling on the same reservation
    • 20% back on select in-flight purchases
    • Priority boarding
    • $100 Delta flight credit after spending $10,000
  2. It allows cardholders to earn bonus miles in select spending categories:
    • 2 miles/dollar on Delta purchases
    • 2 miles/dollar on U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
    • 2 miles/dollar on U.S. shipping purchases
    • 2 miles /dollar at restaurants
    • 1 mile/dollar on all other spending

Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card now offers the biggest welcome bonus of all the cards in this post (expires 28 October 2020):

  • Earn 70,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months of card membership
  • 5,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (find out how to apply)

Note: This welcome offer is not available to applicants who currently have this card or who have had this or previous versions of this card in the past.

If you’ve been following along so far you probably won’t be overly surprised to find out that the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business card is a very similar card to the Platinum personal card and is therefore aimed at a similar type of travelers (one who travels with Delta reasonably frequently).

    • 1.5 miles/dollar on single purchases of over $5,000
    • 1 mile/dollar on all other spending

Bottom Line

Four of Amex’s Delta co-branded credit cards are now promoting new welcome offers which will be available through 28 October 2020. If you’re a very frequent flyer with Delta (i.e you fly with them monthly and almost exclusively) you’ll almost certainly be better off with the Delta SkyMiles Reserve credit card or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business credit card, but for all other Delta flyers, the cards above will probably be a better fit.
