American Express has launched a new offer for stays at Sonesta properties in the United States and in US territories and because of events that we’ve seen in the hotel industry over the past 14 months, this could be a considerably more useful offer now than it would have been this time last year.

Thoughts

You may not know very much about Sonesta properties (I certainly don’t) but Sonesta may be a name that rings a bell if you’ve been keeping up with the news coming out of the hotel industry in the past 18 months.

In August 2020, IHG Hotels & Resorts lost over 100 of its US-based properties to Sonesta following a falling out with the owner of the hotels while in October 2020, Marriott lost 122 of its US properties (including a major resort) to Sonesta following a similar disagreement. Even Hyatt almost lost a number of properties to Sonesta but a last-minute deal prevented that from happening.

Sonesta has seen its portfolio increase by over 230% in the past year so it has considerably more to offer now than it did this time last year. It’s not part of a major loyalty program so that may tarnish this Amex offer for some, but if a Sonesta now has a property somewhere that you’re planning on visiting, this is an offer that is worth keeping in mind.

As far as the targeted cards go, I’m seeing this offer on all my Amex cards that aren’t co-branded hotel cards (I wouldn’t expect my Bonvoy or Hilton cards to incentivize me to book a stay with a different hotelier!) so this doesn’t appear to be an offer that’s targeted to a narrow audience.

As usual, I’ve chosen to load this offer to card_name (review) because it hasn’t been targeted to any of my other cards that offer a bonus for travel or hotel spending.

If you’ve been targeted, hopefully, you’ll have this offer available on a card like the card_name which will earn you, amongst other bonuses, 3 points/dollar on travel (terms apply).

Bottom line

Amex is currently targeting cardholders for savings at Sonesta across the United States and US territories. The discount is valid through 23 January next year so there’s no immediate hurry to book, but if you’re planning a trip to somewhere Sonesta has a nice property, this is an offer to keep in mind.
