Quick thoughts

As usual with these kinds of Amex car rental offers, it looks like only bookings within the US will trigger the rebate, so don’t make the mistake of thinking that a rental in Mexico or anywhere in the Caribbean will get you the rebate.

Also, be aware that the terms and conditions indicate that the $500 of spending required to trigger the rebate must be made in a single rental transaction, so multiple rentals costing $500 won’t trigger the deal (“… to make a single purchase of $500 or more …”).

Card holders should be loading this offer on the card that offers them the best combination of rental car cover and points earnings, and as this seems to be a very widely available offer (we can see it on all of our Amex cards – business and consumer), that shouldn’t be too difficult.

Don’t forget that most (possibly all) Amex cards can be enrolled in “premium car rental protection” which, for a fee of between $12.25 and $24.95 depending on the coverage option selected and your state of residence, will cover you for a single car rental (the number of days that you can be covered for varies by state).

This should (check!) give you the option of primary rental coverage and mean that you can make the most of this offer without having to wonder whether you would be better off passing and using a credit card which will automatically give you primary rental cover (e.g. the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card).

Bottom Line

Holders of Amex cards who need to book and pay for a rental car before 15 September should check to see if they’ve been targeted to save $100 on $500 of spending with Sixt.

Before booking, however, cardholders should also consider if the saving being offered and the benefits that come with the Amex card that they plan to use outweigh the earnings and insurance cover offered by any of the other cards that they hold.
