Thoughts

Most of the participating properties which are centrally located are offering 3,000 bonus points on Standard rooms and 5,000 bonus points on premium rooms and suites.

The properties further out (Heathrow, Windsor etc..) are offering 2,000 bonus points on Standard rooms and 4,000 bonus points on premium rooms and suites.

This has the potential to be a very good deal but you need to understand exactly what it is that you’re buying here because the bonus points aren’t free.

The London Marriott Canary Wharf (reviewed here) is one of the very best choices you can make if you’re looking to get a great deal on a well-located Marriott property for a weekend stay and here’s how this offer works there.

When you use the M11 rate code (as the promotion requires you too) these are the rates you’ll see the property offer for nights in June:

Only the highlighted figures are relevant as you need to stay over a weekend for the promotion to be valid and, as you can see, the rates in the promotion are slightly higher than the cheapest rates you would pay if you turned down the points.

In the case of the London Marriott Canary Wharf the bonus points look like they’ll cost you between £6 and £8 extra per night (~$8.00 and ~$10.50).

The prices being shown are for a Standard room so there are 3,000 points on offer to anyone booking the slightly more expensive rate…and this can work out pretty well.

• If you’re only staying one night and are paying $8 for the bonus points you’re essentially buying Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.27 cents each – that’s a bargain.
• If you’re only staying one night and are paying $10.50 for the bonus points you’re essentially buying Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.35 cents each and that’s half of what most people value them at.

The more nights you stay the worse the offer gets as the bonus points are awarded per stay rather than per night.

• A three night stay which sees a guest pay $10.50/night more than the regular rate will result in him/her paying ~1.0 cent/point…and that’s a poor deal.

This shows why its key to do the math before making a booking.

Bottom Line

This has the potential to be a very nice deal for Bonvoy members who are making short stays and who are prepared to pay attention to the rates being offered.

It looks like the rate differences (between the promo and the standard rates) at the London Marriott Canary Wharf are small enough to make it worth paying a little extra to earn the bonus points….but that may not be the case at all participating properties.

Do the math and only book the promotional rate if you’re ‘buying’ points at an acceptable rate – this isn’t a good deal otherwise.
