With just over two weeks left in the third quarter of 2021, Chase has revealed the 4Q 2021 category spending bonuses for the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card (no longer open to new applicants). Registration for the new bonus categories is now open.

Chase Freedom Flex® credit card 4Q 2021 bonus categories

The registration website for the quarterly bonus categories has now been updated and in the fourth quarter of 2021 the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card (review) and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card will offer 5% cashback (or 5 points/dollar) on up to $1,500 of spending in the following categories:

  • Walmart
  • Purchases made using PayPal

These two bonus categories are in addition to the permanent bonus categories that the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card offers – Travel booked through Chase (5x/dollar) and Drugstores & Dining (3x/dollar).

Based on the fact that there’s a lot that Walmart sells and the fact that an ever-increasing number of retailers now accept PayPal as a form of payment, it shouldn’t be very difficult to max out the 4Q bonuses that are on offer.

It’s a little surprising not to see the department stores category not making a return (it often appears for 4Q as people’s holiday spending kicks in) but as a pairing, I think these categories are better than the categories that are being bonused through the end of this month (Grocery Store Spending and Streaming Services).

Don’t forget that we’ve been seeing a few Walmart-related Chase offers appearing on various cards in recent months…

…and while these offers are hardly significant, it’s always worth checking to see if your Freedom Flex® credit card has been targeted for one before you make any purchases. Why leave free money on the table?

It’s worth noting that for the third quarter running, Chase has limited the bonus categories to just two so I’m starting to get worried that this is a new norm that we’re seeing – three bonus categories are almost always better than two so the sooner that Chase goes back to offering three bonus categories the better.

Anyway, that minor gripe aside, the full $75 cash back or 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on offer in 4Q shouldn’t be too difficult for most of us to earn, and when you get right down to it, that’s really what matters most 🙂

Bottom Line

Chase has confirmed that the 4Q 2021 bonus categories for the Chase Freedom Flex® credit card and the legacy Chase Freedom credit card will be Walmart and PayPal. Registration will remain open through 14 December (here) and bonus points will be earned for spending in these categories between 1 October and 31 December 2021.
