It was almost exactly two months ago that Marriott released details of its latest global promotion which, at the time, was set to run through to 18 October. Now, and with the promotion end-date nearly upon us, Marriott has quietly extended the date through which guests can earn the bonus points on offer.

Earn Bonus Points On Marriott Stays

Here’s what you need to know about Marriott’s latest promotion:

  • Registration is required (here)
  • Stay by 10 November 2020
  • On stays made after registration will qualify for this promotion
  • Earn 2,500 bonus Bonvoy Points per stay
  • Earn a one-time bonus of 5,000 additional Bonvoy Points following your third stay
  • A “stay” is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity on any Points-eligible rate
  • Rates available through most third-party online retailers and select travel agency rates do not qualify for this promotion.
  • Homes & Villas by Marriott International, ExecuStay, Marriott Executive Apartments, and Marriott Vacation Club owner-occupied weeks are not eligible for bonus points.
  • Nights spent while redeeming an award are not eligible for bonus points.
  • Only one room per hotel is counted toward a member’s nights or stay.

Promotion Thoughts

I can’t remember the last time Marriott launched a promotion that I was excited about so this mostly lackluster promotion is neither a surprise nor a disappointment. Still, there are at least a couple of good bits of news here: For once Marriott is counting all stays towards its global promotion (often the first stay is excluded) and there’s no wording in the terms and conditions to exclude bookings that have already been made.

Unlike Hyatt, Marriott always excludes award night bookings from its promotions so it’s no surprise to see that trend continuing here, and it’s not actually a surprise to see this promotion extended either. Back in August, I noted that it was a little out of character for Marriott to be running a global promotion that doesn’t run for longer than a couple of months so the new 10 November end-date is a little more in keeping with what we usually see.

From a rebate point of view, I value Marriott’s Bonvoy Points at 0.6 cents each so effectively, Marriott is offering a $15 rebate per stay and a further one-off rebate of $30 following a guest’s third stay. For someone making short stays (ideally 1-night stays) on very good nightly rates, this promotion could work well. For anyone making longer stays or booking high-end rooms at high-end properties, the effective rebates being offered will be inconsequential and they’re highly unlikely to drive more business to Marriott.

Overall, when you consider the fact that the following promotions are running alongside this new Marriott promotion…

…and that IHG and Hilton have been running better promotions too, it’s hard to see how Marriott’s latest offering will make much of a difference to the number of bookings it receives. Marriott elites who want to continue enjoying their status benefits will probably continue to book with Marriott (but they would have booked with Marriott anyway), but most other travelers will probably realize that there are better promotions out there and make the most of those or they’ll either book purely on price or they’ll simply continue to book with whichever chain is their favorite.

This isn’t a promotion that’s likely to generate more business for Marriott, it’s a promotion that offers a very small pat on the head to travelers who already have Marriott bookings or to travelers who would have booked with Marriott anyway.

Bottom Line

Marriott’s current global promotion has been extended to 10 November 2020 but it’s not a promotion that’s going to get pulses racing. Other hotel chains have been offering better deals up until now and the promotions that are still being run by Hyatt blow this one out of the water. Nevertheless, everyone should still register for this promotion even if you don’t expect to make any Marriott stays – you never know when your plans may change you find yourself walking into a Marriot property unexpectedly, and it would be a shame to miss out on some easy (if not particularly valuable) points because you didn’t register.
