Hyatt is one of the hotel chains that has recently published a promotion for stays this fall but, like most things Hyatt seems to be doing nowadays, the promotion is very much skewed towards those who will put a lot of stays Hyatt’s way in the coming weeks.

Here’s a brief rundown of how the promotion works and what you can earn if you participate:

Earn points when you stay 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 nights at Hyatt properties worldwide:

a table with numbers and a number of points

  • Registration by 15 October is required (click here)
  • Nights stayed between 1 September and 30 November 2018 count towards the promotion.
  • Reward nights count towards the promotion
  • A maximum 60,000 Bonus Points may be earned, regardless of the number of Eligible Nights completed during the Offer Period
  • Only rooms occupied by the World of Hyatt member count towards this promotion

Thoughts

While the headline figure of 60,000 points sounds very tempting (it would get you two nights at any top-tier Hyatt property worldwide) the reality is that this is yet another disappointing promotion from Hyatt.

This promotion covers a period of 91 days so someone would have to spend approximately 44% of the next three months in Hyatt properties to maximise this promotion – that’s a lot of time in hotels.

Out of those 91 nights only 65 are week nights so a road warrior would have to spend over 60% of his/her working nights at Hyatt properties over the next three months if they are to maximise this promotion….and I doubt there will be many people doing that.

I value World of Hyatt points at around 1.3 cents each so the 2,500 points one can earn from staying 5 nights at Hyatt properties are worth approximately $32.50. That’s highly unimpressive and not likely to sway anyone’s decision when it comes to choosing where to stay.

Looking at it another way, someone would have to stay a minimum of 30 nights at Hyatt properties (over the next three months) before they earned enough bonus points to stay at an aspiration Hyatt property. The 17,500 points earned for staying 20 nights would only be enough to book a Category 4 property at best.

The more I examine this promotion the more I’m left wondering what its purpose is.

There’s nothing here to incentivise anyone to plan trips they weren’t already planning, there’s nothing here to tempt people to move their stays over to Hyatt and the top prize is unreachable for the overwhelming majority of travelers.

Why bother having a promotion at all?

Naturally everyone should make sure they register for this promotion just in case they stay enough nights at Hyatt properties to earn some bonus points but no one should be using this promotion as a reason to book more Hyatt stays than they were already planning – there’s very little value to be had here.
