Doha’s Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways have launched Fast Pass, a biometric system that lets passengers use their face instead of a passport or boarding pass at check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding.

Here’s what this actually covers, and what’s still missing.

The details

Fast Pass is optional. You register once, then move through participating checkpoints using facial recognition instead of handing over documents at each step.

How to register:

Through the Qatar Airways app – a one-time setup that carries over to all future eligible Fast Pass trips from Doha.

You can also use the self-service kiosks near Row 3 at Hamad International Airport, but this only activates Fast Pass for that day’s specific trip only, so registration will have to be repeated on every visit.

Where you can use it right now:

  • Four self-service bag drops near Row 3
  • Two security gates (9 and 10)
  • Boarding gates in Concourses A, B, and C

Who’s eligible:

  • Qatar Airways passengers only, for now
  • Passengers with a valid passport who are 18 or older
  • Passengers originating in Doha – connecting and transfer passengers are not currently eligible but may become eligible in time.

Note: Passengers with disabilities aren’t yet supported, although the airport authorities say that this is planned.

How the data is handled

If you register at a kiosk, your biometric and personal data is deleted 24 hours after your flight departs.

If you register through the app, your data is stored on your device and only shared with the airport when Fast Pass is active for a trip.

Hammad International says that non-enrolled passengers who happen to be captured on camera aren’t identified, and nothing is retained.

Quick thoughts

Facial recognition at check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding isn’t new. Dubai, Singapore, and a growing list of US airports have been running similar setups for a while.

What Doha has actually done is connect a lot of touchpoints (HIA says 700+) into one system, which is a genuinely useful integration exercise, but “largest” and “most advanced” aren’t the same claim, and the press release that we’ve seen appears to blur the two.

The thing that I find most interesting here is the rather large gap in how this technology is being used – connecting passengers are currently excluded and the entire business model for Qatar Airways and Hammad International is based on connections.

If you’re flying to Doha and onward the same day, none of this applies to you. The airport has said that transfer passengers will get access “in the near future,” but with no timeline offered, that could still be years away.

The immigration exclusion is worth noting too as there’s no doubt in my mind that at least a handful of people will assume that this system means that they no longer need to use a passport in Doha. That’s definitely not the case.

Bottom line

Fast Pass is live now for Qatar Airways passengers departing Doha, covering four bag drops, two security gates, and boarding gates in Concourses A, B, and C.

Passengers can register once through the Qatar Airways app for repeat use, or at the row 3 kiosks for a single trip. You need a valid passport, to be 18 or older, and to be starting your journey in Doha rather than connecting through it to be eligible.

Other airlines and transfer passengers are due to get access at an unspecified future date.
