Qatar Airways is on a roll with its routes to Australia. It was only at the end of last month that they were finally able to announce service between Doha and Sydney (thanks to a new air services agreement between Australia and Qatar) and now they’ve announced a new daily service to Adelaide as well.

From 2 May 2016 Qatar Airways will fly their new Airbus A350XWB aircraft between Doha and Adelaide on this schedule:

QR914 DOH 20:55 – 16:25+1 ADL
QR915 ADL 21:30 – 04:50+1 DOH

The new route will take Qatar Airways’ capacity to Australia to 28 flights per week spread across Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney and will open up yet another option for Europeans wanting to visit Australia.

I realise I say this almost every time an airline adds a new route but it really is good news for consumers when new flights are added. Qatar Airways is not shy of a good sale and often comes up when I’m searching for good Business Class fares between Europe and anywhere east of Europe. And it’s not just premium cabins that they like to discount, they often have reasonable deals in economy class too (even from the UK). More competition on routes to Australia (which is a notoriously difficult place to get to cheaply) is a very good thing.

Connections

The departure time from Doha and the arrival time back into Qatar are both very similar to the Sydney flight and this is isn’t a coincidence. The timings make connections between the Adelaide flight and some of the major European cities pretty good:

Connections to/from London:

Two of Qatar Airways’ non-stop flights from London Heathrow arrive into Doha at 16:55 and 18:05 respectively and with a 07:45am flight from Doha to London connections to/from Adelaide should work well.

Connections to/from Paris:

Qatar Airways has three non-stop services from Paris to Doha but only the 10:30 departure (which arrives at 17:55) will be good for an onward connection to Adelaide. For the return flight, the 08:25 non-stop service from Doha to Paris should work well.

Connections to/from Frankfurt:

The earlier of the two non-stop flights (departing 11:25) will work well for anyone connecting on to Adelaide. On the return journey the later of the two non-stop flights (departing 08:00) will be the one to catch.

Connections to/from Barcelona:

The earlier of the two non-stop services (10:20 departure) arrives in Doha at 17:45 – so that’s perfect for an easy connection on to Adelaide – and, on the return, the 08:10 departure to Barcelona will give passengers an equally easy route home.

Connections to/from Milan:

The earlier of the two non-stop services to Doha is scheduled to arrive at 17:50, which leaves over 3 hours to connect on to Adelaide. The 08:25 non-stop service between Doha and Milan should make the return connection an easy one as well.

Connections are available to/from other European cities too but, in one or both of the directions, you’ll either require a very long layover or you’ll need to connect twice.
