This is probably going to be one of the shortest blog posts I’ve ever written because all I need it to do is to stop most people from buying IHG Rewards points in the current sale – it’s not a good deal!

IHG Rewards is back with another points sale in which it’s offering a 75% bonus to anyone willing to buy at least 20,000 points by 27 February 2020. For the overwhelming majority of people this a bad idea…and here’s why:

  • IHG frequently (multiple times per year) sells points with a 100% bonus so why would you entertain the idea of getting a bonus that’s 25% less?
  • The cheapest rate at which you can buy points in this sale is ~0.57 cents/point so as you have to put some effort into getting a good deal when IHG is selling points at just 0.5 cents each this isn’t a rate at which most should be buying.

  • It’s often possible to ‘manufacture’ IHG Rewards points at a much cheaper price point by being a little sneaky during Points & Cash promotions (see here) so that’s another reason that paying ~0.57 cents/point probably isn’t a good move.
  • IHG has a history of devaluing IHG Rewards towards the beginning of every year (over 570 properties increased in cost last January) and it often does so with little or no warning. We’re still waiting to see just how much damage is done in 2020 so who knows how much IHG Rewards points will be worth in a few weeks’ time?

Ok, if you desperately need a few thousand points so that you can book the big award trip that you’ve been planning then it’s probably fine to buy a few points in this sale…just make sure you make the booking(s) as soon as you can so you’re not caught out by a sudden unannounced devaluation.

Everyone else should stay away and wait for IHG to bring back its 100% bonus (which it almost certainly will in the not too distant future).
