Rakuten (formerly eBates) is celebrating its birthday today (and for the next week) by offering 15% cash back at over 150 online stores. If you have registered to earn Amex Membership Rewards points in place of cash back the deal is even sweeter as you earn 15 Membership Rewards Points/dollar at all participating stores.

Note: As an added bonus, Rakuten has extended its excellent referral offer ($30 or 3,000 Membership Rewards Points for you and those your refer) through 11 May 2020.

Some of the more popular retailers on which you can earn 15% cash back or 15 Membership Rewards points/dollar include…

  • Adidas
  • Billabong
  • Calvin Klein
  • Coach
  • Disney+
  • eBags
  • Finish Line
  • Foot Locker
  • Groupon
  • Keurig
  • LensCrafters
  • Levis
  • Pier 1
  • Puma
  • Quicksilver
  • Restaurant.com
  • Shoes.com
  • Staples

…but there are over 130 other stores/retailers participating too.

How to elect to earn Membership Rewards Points through Rakuten

There’s no trick to getting the cash back or Membership Rewards points (you just click through to the retailers using the links on Rakuten) but there are two things you should keep in mind:

Firstly, before making any purchases, make sure you check what Amex offers are available in your American Express account as a number of retailers participating in the Rakuten promotion also frequently appear among the Amex offers I’ve been seeing this year. Load your Amex card with any relevant offers and then use that card to pay when you’ve clicked through to the retailer(s) and finished your shopping.

Secondly, if you don’t have any relevant Amex offers to use make sure you use a credit card that will reward you well. Most miles and points credit cards will only offer 1 point or mile per dollar at a lot of the participating retailers so this would be a good opportunity to use a good cash back card like the Citi® Double Cash card

…or to use a card on which you’re currently working towards a strong welcome offer (e.g. if you recently signed up for the improved offer on the World of Hyatt credit card).

Don’t forget that the 15% cash back deal is only available for the next week (through 11 May) so don’t leave it too long before checking if your preferred retailers are participating.

  1. Are you sure about the Amex 10x MR per dollar spent on this? I don’t see any literature on Rakuten’s website reflecting it.
