Quick thoughts

Assuming availability is good, some of the long haul fares are fantastic and if you can avoid the less than spacious narrowbody aircraft and keep all your flights to TAP’s A330-900neos, you’ll find that you’re booked into an excellent Business Class cabin.

The short-haul deals look less enticing and I suspect that if you shop around, you’ll find a few other airlines offering better fares (and possibly better routings).

Don’t forget

Make sure you get the best deal out of whatever fare you book by using a credit card that gives you a good return on your travel spending and, preferably, one that also comes with good travel protections.

The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5 points/dollar for spending made directly with airlines (terms apply), the Business Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5 points/dollar for airfares booked through Amex Travel (terms apply), while the Chase Sapphire Reserve® credit card earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending and, very importantly, all three of these cards offer good trip delay, interruption, and cancellation protections.

The Amex Green Card also earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending but doesn’t offer the same level of protection as the Platinum Card or the Sapphire Reserve.

Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The American Express® Green Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom line

TAP Air Portugal is running a strong Business Class sale through 2 October in which it’s highlighting round trip transatlantic fares originating from the US starting at around $1,650 and transatlantic fares originating in Europe starting at around €1,200. Before you jump on any good deals that you may find make sure you check which aircraft you’re booking (try to book widebody aircraft where possible) and keep an eye out for any overly long layovers in Portugal. You may need to book a long (overnight) layover in at least one direction to get the best fares but that’s not always going to be the case.
