American Express has recently updated the welcome bonus that it’s offering on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card (review) and not only has Amex increased the number of bonus points that the card is offering but it’s also added the most valuable free night certificate that we’ve ever seen Marriott issue.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card

In Brief

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card (review) costs $450/year to hold (rates & fees) and offers cardholders a combination of credits towards Marriott Bonvoy elite status, a great earning rate at Marriott properties worldwide, an annual free night that no other widely available Marriott card offers, a Marriott stay credit that helps cardholders offset most of the annual fee, and travel benefits that make can make trips considerably less stressful and noticeably more enjoyable. In short, it’s the best Marriott co-branded card for a Marriott fan to hold.

New Welcome Bonus (Terms Apply)

  • 150,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy Points + a bonus free night award (valid at properties costing up to 85,000 points per night) after a successful new applicant spends $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of card membership (find out more).

As far as the bonus points go, the 150,000 points the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card is currently offering are worth $900 based on my valuation of Marriott Bonvoy Points (0.6 cents each) but more importantly, they’re more than enough to get a cardholder two to three free nights at some truly excellent Bonvoy properties around the world.

As far as the free night certificate goes, we’ve never seen a Marriott certificate worth up to 85,000 points before so this is something special.

With the Marriott Bonvoy award chart currently looking like this…

…you should be able to see that the free night certificate that comes as part of the welcome offer can be used to book a night at any Marriott property in the world in standard or off-peak season, and a night at any property in Category 7 or below regardless of the season.

Considering some top-tier Marriott properties can cost in excess of $750/night it’s easy to see how valuable this certificate can be but even if it’s used to book a lower level property outside of peak season, the certificate can still save its user at least $400. That’s fantastic value.

Note: Make sure you check the eligibility criteria for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card before you apply (you’ll find them at the end of this post).

Card Earning Rates (Terms Apply)

  • 6 points/dollar on spending made with Marriott*
  • 3 points/dollar on dining at U.S. restaurants (includes takeout and delivery)
  • 3 points/dollar on flights booked directly with airlines
  • 2 points/dollar for spending in all other categories

*No Marriott Bonvoy credit card offers a better earning rate at Marriott properties.

Quick Thoughts

If you’ve been considering getting the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card now may be a very good time to apply.

Between the annual free night certificate that the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card offers and the $300 Marriott statement credit that the card offers cardholders every year, anyone getting the Brilliant Card should easily be able to offset the cost of holding the card year after year.

As well as being a card whose annual fee should be easy to earn back, this is what else everyone currently getting approved for the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Credit Card and earning the welcome bonus will get in their first year (terms apply):

  • A free night award valid at properties costing up to 85,000 points/night
  • A $100 Marriott Bonvoy property credit valid on 2-night bookings at Ritz-Carlton or St Regis properties
  • 15 elite night credits
  • Priority Pass Select Membership
  • Global Entry or TSA Precheck membership credit

The free night from the welcome offer should be worth at least $400 (probably a lot more) so even if a new cardholder doesn’t get to use the $100 Ritz-Carlton/St Regis property credit, the Priority Pass membership, or the Global Entry/TSA Precheck credit, they will still be better off than they were before they got the card…and that’s a very nice position to be in.
