Update 7 October 2021: The 2021 Week of Wonders deals are now live – click here for more details

In October last year, Marriott introduced us to what it called its “Week of Wonders” promotion which saw it offering a variety of deals and discounts across a period of 7 days. Now Marriott’s social media teams are plugging a Week of Wonders promotion for October 2021 and while we don’t yet know what this year’s deals will look like, it’s probably a safe bet to say that they’ll be pretty similar to what was offered last year.

I guess the first thing that I should say is that no one should be getting overly excited about the return of the Week of Wonders because while the word “week” was correctly used in the promotion’s title last year (it ran for 7 days), nothing that was offered in 2020 could be considered even close to “wonderous”.

This year’s Week of Wonders page can be found here but apart from telling us that the deals (such as they are) will be available from 7 October, it doesn’t really give us much of an idea of what to expect.

On the grounds that Marriott promotions team is among the least inventive team in the hotel business and has spent the last few years churning out some of the blandest, most boring, and uninspiring promotions around, there’s a very strong chance that we’ll just see a re-run of 2020. With that in mind, here’s a recap of what the 2020 Week of Wonders promotion offered:

  • Wonders of Discovery – for one week, Bonvoy members could book reward nights “for up to 33%” less for stays through the end of November. Effectively, properties were charging off-peak rates for a very short period.
  • Wonders of Comfort – for one week, Marriott offered 30% off all merchandise. This discount was available on most Marriott branded products including items like The Westin Heavenly Bed, The Ritz-Carlton Fragrance Collection, EDITION Hotels La Labo amenities, St. Regis Frette Collection, and W Hotels robes.
  • Wonders of Rejuvenation – This wasn’t really a new promotion as much as it was two old promotions combined and presented as something new – this was Marriott Bonvoy Escapes with Marriott Escape To Luxury in a slightly different guise (hotels and resorts throughout the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America were offering discounts of up to 25% on the best flexible rate) and the promotions ran for 4 days and 2 days respectively.
  • Wonders of Excitement – This wasn’t a new promotion either. It was a Marriott promotion that was already in progress and which offered Bonvoy members 2,500 points for each stay and a one-time bonus of 5,000 points after three stays.

Like I said, there was nothing particularly wonderous about the 2020 Week of Wonders.

Bottom Line

Marriott has announced that it will be resurrecting its Week of Wonders promotion that we saw the hotelier run in October 2020. If we’re lucky, the 2021 promotion may give us a slightly longer window in which to enjoy discounted award pricing than we saw last year but given Marriott’s track record, I can’t honestly say that I hold out much hope that we’re going to see anything truly exciting revealed.

They say that any promotion is better than no promotion and I guess that’s probably true…but that only just about applies when it comes to Marriott Bonvoy 🙂
