A couple of weeks ago, the big Marriott news was that the Bonvoy program will be devaluing in spectacular style next year. At the same time, however, there was a little bit of good news as Marriott confirmed that it would extend elite statuses into 2023 and extend the expiration dates of various certificates and upgrades as well. At least some of those extensions are now appearing in member accounts.
The extensions are posting
I’m fortunate enough to have lifetime elite status with Marriott so I can’t see whether or not the promised elite status extensions have been processed, but I can see that the certificate and upgrade extensions have been applied.
Here’s a before and after view of my 35k Free Night Certificate showing an extension to 30 June 2022:
And here is a before and after view of my Suite Night Awards also showing an extension to 30 June 2022:
Also, and even though they were not mentioned in Marriott’s last announcement, the expiration dates on my Ritz-Carlton upgrades have also been extended:
If your account isn’t yet showing the extensions, it could be that Marriott is processing these in batches or that your certificates are not eligible for an extension.
As a reminder, Marriott’s announcement back in October said that Bonvoy members with Free Night Awards with expiration dates between 3 January and 29 June 2022 will have those expiration dates extended to 30 June 2022. That these extensions will apply to Free Night Awards earned from Marriott Bonvoy co-branded credit cards, the annual choice benefits, promotions, and travel packages.

- Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card – valid on bookings costing up to 35,000 Points/Night (terms apply)
- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card – valid on bookings costing up to 80,000 Points/Night (terms apply)
Cards No Longer Open To New Applicants:

- Chase Ritz-Carlton Credit Card – valid on bookings costing up to 80,000 Points/Night
- Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card – valid on bookings costing up to 35,000 Points/Night
Don’t forget that as of March next year, Bonvoy members will be able to use up to 15,000 points to boost the value of an upgrade certificate that they are using.
A couple of weeks ago, Marriott said that select Free Night Certificates and Suite Night Awards would have their expiration dates extended through 30 June 2022 and it looks like an overnight update has seen those extensions processed (some extensions may still be processing). As good as this news is, it shouldn’t distract anyone from the fact that we’re only a few months away from a huge Bonvoy devaluation, and with that devaluation in mind, it may be a good idea to burn whatever certificates you have in your account before they become considerably less valuable than they are right now (that’s what I plan to do!).
