Towards the end of October Marriott announced that it would once again be extending the validity period of all free night certificates and upgrade certificates that were set to expire before 31 July 2021. True to its word, that’s exactly what Marriott has now done.

Marriott had given itself up to today (11 December) to put through the extensions that it had promised, but it actually started processing the extensions earlier this week and if you check your Marriott Bonvoy account, you should see that any certificates that you have now have an expiration date of, at the earliest, 1 August 2021.

If you had a certificate that was set to expire in July, this probably won’t make very much difference to you but if like me, you had Ritz-Carlton upgrades set to expire in March and a free night certificate set to expire at the beginning of February, this is a very welcome move to see.

My account now shows all my certificates will expire on 1 August 2021

As an unexpected bonus (Marriott hadn’t said that it would be doing this), it would appear as if anyone who has a Marriott travel package sitting in their account will also find that the Travel Package’s validity has now been extended. Personally speaking, I don’t have one of these but Greg over at Frequent Miler has just had his 7-night package extended to 1 August 2021.

Bottom Line

Marriott has followed through on its promise to extend the validity of any free night certificates and upgrade certificates that were set to expire before 31 July 2021 (IHG could learn from this!), and members with these certificates sitting in their accounts should now see that they will now not expire before 1 August 2021. In addition, anyone with a Marriott Travel Package should also see that the validity of their package has been extended.
