The welcome bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card has now been changed from a straight 100,000 points to a bonus that offers three free nights and a chance to earn 10 points per dollar on spending made in select (and popular) categories.

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

I’m not going to go into great detail about what the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card offers as you can read all about that in this review. What I *will* do in this post is offer an overview of what the card offers and discuss the new welcome bonus that the card now offers.

In Brief

Note: Make sure you read the paragraph on who is eligible to apply for this card and who is eligible for this welcome bonus which you’ll find at the end of this post.

Card Earnings

Key Benefits

  • Receive a free award night valid at properties costing up to 35,000 points/night on every card anniversary
  • 15 elite nights credit towards status
  • Earn Bonvoy Gold status when you spend $35,000 on the card each account year
  • No foreign transaction fees

The Welcome Offer

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card (review) is currently offering successful new applicants 3 Free Nights (each worth up to 50,000 points) after they spend $3,000 on their card in the first three months after they open their account.

For reference, below is the Marriott Bonvoy award chart, and from it, you should be able to see that each free night from the welcome offer would be able to book a stay at any Category 1 – 5 property regardless of the season, any Category 6 property during standard and off-peak seasons, and any Category 7 property using off-peak season only.

There are some very good Marriott Bonvoy properties around the world at which a room can be booked for just 50,000 points per night (e.g. the St Regis Langkawi, The Ritz-Carlton Abama, Marriott’s Ko’Olina Beach Club, and Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club to name just a few), and as these are properties at which room rates frequently exceed $400 per night, there’s definitely value to be had out of this welcome offer.

However, before there’s too much excitement about the prospect of enjoying a long weekend at a great property courtesy of Chase and Marriott, there are a few things to note about this part of the welcome offer.

Some people will make the mistake of valuing their welcome offer at 150,000 points because that the value that it’s possible to get out of the three free night certificates. To my mind, that’s wrong.

While Bonvoy Points can be prevented from expiring and while 50,000 Bonvoy Points would get you change when spent at a property costing less than 50,000 points, a free night certificate cannot be prevented from expiring (it will expire 12 months from the date of issue) and it won’t get you any change when used at a property costing less than 50,000 points per night.

Yes, it’s very possible to get 150,000 points of value out of the welcome bonus (assuming all three certificates are used to book nights costing 50,000 points), but 150,000 actual Bonvoy Points are considerably more versatile than three free night certificates worth 50,000 each, so keep this in mind when weighing up the merits of this bonus.

Lastly, I should mention the spending bonus.

The 10 points/dollar that’s currently on offer for spending at gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores is 8 points/dollar more than the card normally offers in the qualifying categories so as I value Marriott Bonvoy Points at 0.6 cents each (based on the value I know I can get out of them without much effort), this added bonus is effectively equivalent to an extra 4.8% rebate on spending up to up to $2,500 across the qualifying categories in the first 6 months of holding the card.

That’s a bonus worth up to $120 which, on its own, is more than enough to cover the annual fee in year 1.

Bottom Line

The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card (review) is a very solid card for anyone who’s looking to earn the maximum number of points on their Marriott stays without splashing out on a $450/year credit card and it’s also the cheapest card that can be paired with the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card (review) to give a cardholder an impressive boost towards valuable elite status every year.

Right now, the Boundless Card is offering successful new applicants a bonus of 3 free night certificates which can be used at properties costing up to 50,000 points per night as well as a spending bonus that sees cardholders earning 10 points per dollar on up to $2,500 of combined spending at restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations.

As Marriott welcome bonuses go, this is a very good one, but anyone considering applying for the Boundless card just to get the welcome bonus should be aware of the limitations that come with the free night certificates – they can be a fantastic way to enjoy some great properties for free, but they also expire so make sure you’ll be able to use them before you make any extra effort to earn them.
