Work has started on the Western Pier of London City Airport in what is billed as a project to help the airport deal with the millions of passengers that use it each year.

London City airport opened in 1987 and was never really designed to deal with the passenger numbers that it sees today. In its first full year of operations (1988) the airport handled just 133,000 passengers while, in 2014, over 3.7 million passengers took off from its one solitary runway. That number is expected to rise to 4 million in 2015.

The western pier of the airport currently holds 70% of the airport’s departure gates with the works poised to increase the size of the pier by up to 84%. In addition to adding 600 extra seats the new works will create space for new retail and food & beverage outlets to help serve the increased numbers the airport is seeing. Other improvements will see electronic boarding gates, workspaces, quiet areas and charging points for those all important, battery-sapping, electronics

The project is expected to cost £16m ($25m) and should be completed by Summer 2016. These projects being what they are, expect that price to increase and the completion date to be pushed back. I’ll believe that completion date when I see them cutting the ribbon!
