Earlier, I wrote about Citi bringing some easy-to-use offers for IHG properties in the United States but this targeted Citi offer isn’t one that I recall ever seeing before. Targeted cardholders are being offered $50 back on all Virgin Atlantic bookings made in the US and US territories with the caveat that only bookings made before the end of October (for travel into 2022) will trigger the saving.

Save on Virgin Atlantic bookings with Citi

The offer is pretty straightforward:

Spend $500 or more on a Virgin Atlantic booking or before 31 October 2021 and get $50 back.

The key things to remember are:

  1. Only bookings made in the US and US territories will trigger the saving
  2. It’s probably safe to assume that only flights originating in the US will trigger the saving (even though this isn’t specifically mentioned in the very limited terms and conditions appended to the offer).
  3. Virgin Atlantic has a pretty good cancellation policy but like most current cancellation policies, it doesn’t offer a full cash refund if you decide to to fly so make sure you know what you’re signing up for before you book.
  4. Fully vaccinated travelers no longer have to take a Covid test before flying to England and from 24 October will only have to take a cheaper, lateral flow test two days after arrival. There is no need to self-isolate upon arrival if you are fully vaccinated and are arriving in to England from the United States.

Note: Make sure you have good travel insurance before you travel. Plans can change very suddenly and you may not be fully covered by whatever credit card you used to book your trip.

Quick Thoughts

Given that you can currently book roundtrip travel from the US to London from $570, the $50 saving being offered to targeted Citi cardholders who spend $500 with Virgin Atlantic looks pretty good.

Keep in mind that there doesn’t appear to be any wording attached to this offer that suggests that codeshare flights are not included (it looks like you just have to make a booking through Virgin Atlantic) so it should be possible to trigger this rebate by booking Delta operated flights to Europe, flights to Europe that route via London (last leg operated by Air France/KLM), as well as Virgin Atlantic flights that terminate in London. That means that this offer is probably a lot more versatile than may appear at first glance.

Also, as this offer appears to be targeted to a variety of Citi cards, make sure you save it to a card that offers you the best return on your spending. I’m seeing this offer on my Citi Double Cash Card (review) but I’ll be using my Citi Premier Card if I make a booking because it offers me 3 points/dollar on spending made directly with airlines in contrast to the 2% cash back that the Double Cash card would earn me.

Ideally, you’ll have this offer targeted to your Citi Prestige Card (no longer open to new applicants) as that offers a fantastic 5 points/dollar on air travel but I suspect that the number of people reading this who still hold that card is significantly lower now than it was a year ago.

Bottom Line

Citi has published a limited-time offer that gives targeted cardholders $50 back on spending of $500 or more made with Virgin Atlantic. The terms and conditions published alongside the offer in my account are virtually nonexistent and that suggests to me that the offer can probably be put to broader use than the headline deal may suggest – as long as you book through Virgin Atlantic’s US page and as long as your travel originates in the US or US territories, this rebate will probably be triggered by codeshare flights as well as flights taken on Virgin Atlantic, and that’s very good news.
