At the very beginning of the year, Amex gave existing holders of its consumer Platinum Card a nice surprise when it published a series of good offers valid for the first 6 months of the year. A number of these offers represent an easy way for cardholders to recoup a good portion of their card’s annual fee but with less than three weeks to go before the end of June, time is now running out for anyone who hasn’t yet used up all the offers they can.
The Platinum Card’s Special Offers
These are the offers that Amex targeted me for and that I loaded to my Platinum Card (review):
If your Platinum Card account was open and in good standing on 31 October 2020, all of these offers should have appeared in your account and should still be there if you haven’t already used them (anyone who opened a new account from 1 November 2020 onwards will not have access to these offers).
Be aware that all of these offers come with their own individual terms and conditions so you should make sure you read each of them very carefully before attempting to trigger any of the rebates – it’s easy to fall foul of the rules. I learned this the hard way by failing to read the terms of the Home Depot offer, spending $50+ at my local store, and only then realizing that the offer was for online purchases only and only for “ship to home” or “ship to store” purchases. Not one of my finer moments.
All that being said, the offers themselves are pretty good. Sure, if you have no real need for a new TV it probably won’t be easy to trigger the Samsung offer and it’s probably a bit late to start trying to trigger the Equinox offer, but the Home Depot, Container Store, and Best Buy offers are easily triggered (as long as you read the small print!) and that’s $300 in rebates straight away.
One word of caution: Please don’t put any spending on your Platinum Card just to trigger an offer unless you’re only spending a little over $50 to trigger a $50 rebate. Any other spending just to trigger an offer is foolhardy and does not represent a true saving.
Bottom Line
At the beginning of the year, American Express targeted most holders of its consumer Platinum Card for a series of good offers that were valid for a period of 6 months. These offers expire in less than 3 weeks’ time so if you have yet to use yours up, you’re running out of time.
