Things To Keep In Mind

Travel Restrictions

The European Union has recently announced that travelers who have had both of their coronavirus vaccinations (using vaccines approved by the EU) will be allowed to travel from the US to Europe without the risk of quarantine this coming summer. That’s great news for anyone wanting to make the most of these fantastic fares but it doesn’t mean that anyone should be taking things for granted.

If there’s one thing that we should have all learned from the past year it’s that circumstances and policies can change very quickly so no one should be booking travel without being very aware of their rights (to cancel or to get a refund) and being aware of the policies of the airline they’re booking through. For reference, here’s a link to TAP’s current coronavirus policy.

Stopovers

Some of the long-haul fares that I’ve been seeing require an overnight layover in Portugal so If you’d like to see a bit of Portugal this would probably be a good opportunity. If, however, you’d prefer to get to your destination as soon as possible, make sure you choose your flights carefully.

Aircraft

If you’re booking one of TAP’s longer routes (e.g. a transatlantic route), the key to getting the very most out of your flight experience will be to try to book flights operated by TAP’s new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft which have a great Business Class cabin with excellent lie-flat seating.

On some of its longer routes (e.g. some routes to/from the US East Coast), TAP operates narrowbody aircraft (from the Airbus A320 family) whose Business Class cabin isn’t as good as the Business Class cabin on the A330-900neo. Depending on where you’re traveling to/from you may not be able to avoid the smaller aircraft but if you can, the A330-900neo is the aircraft to go for.

Don’t Forget

Make sure you get the best deal out of whatever fare you book by using a credit card that gives you a good return on your travel spending and, preferably, one that also comes with good travel protections.

The Platinum Card from American Express (review) earns 5 points/dollar for spending made directly with airlines, the Business Platinum Card from American Express (review) earns 5 points/dollar for flights booked through Amex Travel, while the Chase Sapphire Reserve card earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending. Importantly, all three of these cards offer good trip delay, interruption, and cancellation protection.

The Amex Green Card earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending but doesn’t offer the same level of protection as the Platinum Cards or the Sapphire Reserve, and although the Citi Prestige Card matches the Platinum Card with its earnings of 5 points/dollar on spending made directly with airlines, the fact that it offers no travel protections at all makes it a less appealing option.

Bottom Line

TAP Air Portugal’s excellent Business Class sale for travel to/from North America, Europe, the UK, Africa, and South America ends today and some of the deals that are still around are truly fantastic. Having said that, anyone considering booking one of these fares should first consider the current travel restrictions, and they should familiarize themselves with TAP’s cancellation/rebooking policy in the event that they decide not to travel.
