Just two weeks ago, KLM announced that it would be cutting three of its winter routes between Amsterdam and the United States as the Biden administration continued to do nothing to open up travel for most Europeans and as the Dutch government imposed new restrictions on US travelers. Now, following sudden and unexpected changes of heart by both governments, KLM has announced that two of those three routes will be operated after all…albeit a little later than planned.

Between 31 October 2021 and 26 March 2022, KLM was scheduled to offer services to Las VegasMiami, and Orlando from its home base in Amsterdam but all three routes were suspended on 10 September. Today, KLM has confirmed that, a little later than planned, it will operate the routes to Las Vegas and Miami after all.

Las Vegas

From 7 December 2021 KLM will offer a 3x/week service between Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and Las Vegas on the following schedule:

KL635 AMS 12:35 – 14:10 LAS (Tue, Thu & Sun)
KL636 LAS 15:59 – 10:50+1 day AMS (Tue, Thu & Sun)

Las Vegas is also a summer season destination for KLM so this route will continue to operate past March 2022 and (assuming the current schedules remain as they are) will be getting at least one more weekly flight (on Saturdays).

Miami

From 6 December 2021 KLM will offer a 3x/week service between Amsterdam and Miami on the following schedule:

KL627 AMS 10:20 – 14:20 LAS (Tue, Fri & Sun)
KL628 LAS 16:30 – 06:50+1 day AMS (Tue, Fri & Sun)

As things stand, this route is set to run through Friday 25 March 2022 and the current schedules don’t show it coming back for Summer 2022. This may change as and when KLM updates its schedules but for now, Miami remains a winter route for KLM.

The Aircraft

Both routes are currently scheduled to be operated by KLM 787-9 Dreamliners featuring 30 lie-flat Business Class seats (in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone layout), 48 Economy Comfort seats (offering up to 35″ of seat pitch), and 216 standard Economy Class seats with just 31″ of seat pitch.

Considering KLM is still operating its antiquated 777s with a 2-2-2 Business Class cabin layout on its Amsterdam – Los Angeles route, it’s a little surprising to see the more comfortable Dreamliner operating to Las Vegas and Miami (presumably KLM needs the extra capacity of the 777 on the LA route), but LA’s loss is Miami and Las Vegas’ gain and these two routes will be ones to look out for when Flying Blue finally starts to bring back its good Promo Award sales.

Bottom Line

KLM has announced that it has, in part, reversed a decision that it announced a couple of weeks ago that saw it suspend three routes between Amsterdam and the United States. The airline will now operate its winter routes to Las Vegas and Miami after all (the routes will relaunch a little over a month after they were originally expected to launch) but the airline’s winter route to Orlando remains suspended for now.
