KLM has updated its Dream Deals Business Class offers for travel between the US to include considerably more routes than the original offer (which is only about a week old) and to reduce the fares on a number of routes by up to $200. There aren’t any amazing fares on offer in this set of Dream Deals but the prices do represent a significant saving on what we often see transatlantic Business Class fares costing so this is well worth a closer look.

Terms & conditions

Quick thoughts

The best Business Class deals we generally see for travel to Europe are between $1,700 and $2,000 (yes, there are exceptions that are cheaper) so these Dream Deals don’t represent the very best fares we see… but some are still pretty good!

If you can snag a round-trip, Business Class fare between San Francisco and Madrid for $2,007 or San Francisco and Barcelona for $2,003 (including all taxes and fees) that’s not bad going at all, and Chicago to Amsterdam for $2,096 isn’t bad either.

The biggest issue with these fares is that availability can be limited so no one should be expecting to find these fares available throughout the year (let alone on the exact dates they want to fly).

The San Francisco – Madrid fare (for example) is only available for travel in 5 out of the 11 bookable months…

…but they look generous compared to some of the fares where the very best deals are only available in one or two of the upcoming months.

Where to credit the flights?

The KLM Business Class fares that I’ve seen all book into “Z” Class and, per the wheretocredit website, these are the loyalty programs these flights can be credited to and the associated earning rates:

Different people will have different priorities, but if I was booking one of these fares I’d probably credit my flights to Delta SkyMiles or Virgin Atlantic.

Use the best credit card

card_name offers the strongest option here as it combines fantastic earnings (5 Membership Rewards points/dollar on up to $500,000 of flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel and 1 point/dollar thereafter – terms apply) with good trip delay, interruption, and cancellation protections.

I’d choose the card_name as the second-best option because it combines good earnings (3 points/dollar) with the same good trip delay, interruption, and cancellation protections that the Platinum Card offers and the bonus points will be earned even if the spending isn’t made directly with an airline (this is the card to use when booking through 3rd party sites).

The card_name earns 3 points/dollar for just about all travel spending but doesn’t offer the same level of protection as card_name or the card_name, and although the Citi Prestige® credit card (no longer open to new applicants) matches card_name with its earnings of 5 points/dollar on spending made directly with airlines, the fact that it doesn’t offer cardholders any travel protections at all makes it a considerably less appealing option.

Note: All information about the American Express® Green Card has been collected independently by Traveling For Miles. The American Express® Green Card is not currently available through Traveling For Miles.

Bottom line

These fares may not be stunning, amazing or mind-blowing, but they’re still pretty good and, if you can make the dates work for you they can offer an affordable way to travel to/from Europe in a lot more comfort than Economy Class or Premium Economy offer.

  1. As of this past Thursday, the 16th, UA had fares in Aug on jets with New Polaris J cabins from EWR-LHR, that beat the special fare listed.
